The Royal Irrigation Department and other agencies responsible for dams and reservoirs have been instructed to come up with water drainage plans in anticipation of the arrival of another storm in September which is expected to bring more rains.

Mr Somkiart Prachamwong, secretary-general of the National Water Resources Office, said Friday that old statistics could not be applied this year because the water situation has changed, with all the more than 10 dams and reservoirs of big and medium sizes being over 80 percent filled up against their full capacities and seven reservoirs with water volume exceeding the control level.

Citing the Vajiralolngkorn dam in Kanchanaburi, he said the dam has water exceeding the control level and the water to be drained out of the dam has been increased to 53 million cubic metres/day from 43 million cubic metres/day.

I'm sure I've heard that before.

Not sure why they keep shooting themselves in the foot?

Fact is dams in the North are at 64%, North east 53%, Central 30%, East 64% capacities, only the West getting full at 90%, do they know something we don't ?

Me too, just can't remember what time of year

Who'd have thought that a storm might be coming in September, right in the middle of the rainy season?  And that it might bring some rain with it?

The Director of the Phetchaburi Irrigation Scheme claimed the other day the Phetchaburi Dam was 109% full.

Phetchaburi is in the South, they always get lots of rains down there as they get every monsoon that runs! Hardly news, unless its preparation for the forthcoming drought? ?

Thank you for that info. Can you also explain how it would be 109% full? I can understand it being 100% full.......but 109%? Is there a hidden meaning to that number?

I can take a guess ? design level at 100% would be controlled, certified & safe as per design, with no localized flooding? ?

We were at Udonrat dam last year when the level was at ~107%, we went to eat at one of the local eateries to find they expected us to sit with water around our calves as the surrounding area was so flooded. Same dam today is at 28%, they need water as this dam also produces electricity.

What Thailand needs to do is to gets its head out of its posterior, look for and HIRE Water experts from anywhere in the world and do what they suggest. In the Thai Government there is NOT ONE logical thinking official regarding water .!!

I’m not even sure they go to work for months at a time

Like an engine's "red line" It will not blow up at 1 rpm over the "red line", but that is the

upper safe operating line. You can probably go over by 10-15%, but it may damage the engine.

No, because the great one has already informed us otherwise although they are laying the groundwork now for the  global warming get out clause/election winning story
