webfact
50 foreign inmates to serve remaining time in their home countries By The Nation File photo Fifty foreign inmates have been approved for transfer to serve their remaining time behind bars in their home countries, said Corrections Department chief Narat Sawettanan on Thursday. Inmates from Iran, France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the Netherlands and Spain qualified for the transfers as per the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced People, he said. The department had since 1990 transferred 1,083 foreign inmates whose cases were finalised in courts, while 17 Thai inmates had been transferred from other countries to serve their remaining jail time in Thailand, he said. Prisoner transfers are granted to qualified inmates so they can be near their families, and thus help to improve their behaviour and motivate them to turn over a new leaf before release back to society, said Narat. Narat also reported that the agency’s committee for imprisonment suspension – chaired by Justice Ministry permanent secretary Wisit Wisitsora-at – has approved the paroled release of 674 inmates from 64 prisons. These inmates were deemed to have shown good behaviour and discipline, have undergone behavioural rehabilitation, present no threat to society, and have only a small time left to serve behind bars, he said. Good reason. Me thinks that the prisons are starting to get full, and they need more room for the domestic criminals with Thai citizenship. 4

zzaa09
...and while we're at it, round up all the undesirable foreign residents - real or wannabes. Send 'em all back to where they came from. Sure would benefit the country.

toofarnorth
1083 going home and only 17 coming back , surely there is something to be said looking at the difference or is it that most Thais can not afford to go out of the country.

unblocktheplanet
Although I wish it were not the case, prisoner transfer for humane reasons is mostly a cruel joke. If a foreign convict gets any sentence, say 35-60 years, they have to serve eight years in Thailand before transfer. However, if a foreign convict is sentenced to life imprisonment, they may be transferred in four--go figure! Imagine the jails in the countries where Thais were convicted! Must be lower than hellholes to want to serve time here.
gaff
And when the court decision was taken by idiots in Thailand, for example when sent to jail 20 years for drug, do they really have to finish their time back home, or can they be freed faster ? If Scandinavia had any brains, it would pay Thailand to keep them here. Must be cheaper that staying in those nordic hotels.
