Tourists asked not to feed pigeons at Tha Pae Gate

 

 

CHIANG MAI, 27 September 2018 (NNT) - Tourists in Chiang Mai have been warned not to feed pigeons at Tha Pae Gate or face a maximum fine of 25,000 baht as the birds could carry diseases dangerous to humans. 

The number of pigeons seen daily at Tha Pae Gate has reportedly increased to 10,000. Despite the warning, vendors continued to sell bird food to tourists who also ignored the "Do Not Feed the Birds" signs. 

To solve this problem, police and city officers have been deployed to the tourist site to remind tourists and vendors of the legal consequences. 

First a verbal warning will be given to tourists and vendors. Subsequently, anyone found feeding the birds will be fined a maximum of 25,000 baht or face a 3-month jail term under the Public Health Act. 

Bird food sellers will also be fined up to 12,000 baht on the spot under the Maintenance of the Cleanliness and Orderliness of the Country Act and the Animal Feed Quality Control Act.

I can see a don't feed the animals sign nothing about not feeding the birds maybe that sign should be more specific .

Thai Seller of pigeon food - 12,000 baht fine

Foreign buyer/feeder of pigeon - 25,000 fine

Glad to see they maintained the foreign double pricing policy!...

And the sign is as far away from the tourist & pigeons as one can possible place the sign and faced away from the square...

that is in direct contrast to what the photo shows; birds are not 'animals', landslide of internet agrees

Saw and spoke to the cops there today---so lets see how this goes but was nice to see an effort....

 

Time will tell...

They blocked the entrance where u can get your scooter in there to park

They should completely crack down on the vendors.  However, if they employ those Machiavellian fines and jail sentences on the predominately Chinese tourists feeding the pigeons, once that gets back to the Chinese government, the flow of Chinese tourists will start to dry up just like the flow of farang tourist has already. 

What the Thai government has is a bird problem, exacerbated by vendors selling food, to tourists who are probably just trying to be compassionate.  The vendors selling food should be eliminated, then the birds should be removed, then tourists become inconsequential to the equation.  But we all know that is not how it's going to work.

As I bike by there and often cut thru the gate on bike daily it has been BETTER....today it was actually noticeably more open with LESS birds,  funny part there was the chinese of course trying to do the arms out thing for the stupid photo op....BUT without the damn food the diseased rats aka birds weren't having it..lol

Still checking it daily--they have moved the signs and seems to be improving-hence no FOOD!

 

Still have the chinese trying to get those birds to do a selfies with them but with NO FOOD..its not so easy

How many policemen does it take to control pigeon feeding at the Gate? well this morning 4 walking abreast patrolling the area.

 

Overkill ?   Quite a few people wandering around, their holiday highlight ruined and pigeons in a state of confusion
