BANGKOK — Though abortion remains nominally illegal, about 200,000 women end their pregnancies each year through safe and unsafe channels, killing dozens and leaving tens of thousands suffering complications.

On the eve of an international reproductive rights day, proponents of access to safe abortion in Thailand point out that while progress has been made, barriers remain in the form of restrictive laws and socially conservative attitudes.

“Some police still think that any case of abortion is illegal,” she said. “People in the medical field also reject them on moral grounds.”

Since when have the police known what is legal and what is not!  The medical profession rejecting them on 'moral grounds' is ridiculous.  The article quoted is well worth a read.

A good article, but Thailand is not on its own about legal abortions, a lot of Catholic countries are like  Thailand.

It was only this year that the Irish Republic at long last made abortions legal.

The Buddhist teaching alone will stop any change in the law, my wife is well against abortions, that would be on religious grounds.

You can say what century are we in, but this is one thing where the law will not be changed, and as the article said socially conservative attitudes, more chance of changing Thai driving habits.

Far better to increas the budget and publicity on family planning.

The law doesn't need changing.  It is already legal to have a termination for a number of reasons.  If you read the article, you will note that the abortion pill and even the 'morning after' pill is now legal.

The 'catch all' is pretty much covered by allowing abortions on socio-economic grounds.

There are only a couple of the big hospitals that perform abortions.  Most are carried out at medical centres/clinics.
