The burning question: Does Big Joke deserve the top job?

 

Today's ministerial level meeting to decide some of the top jobs in the police force throws up some interesting candidates, said INN.

 

Top of the list that will be decided by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan is his new spokesman Maj-Gen Surachate Hakpan - known in the Thai media as Big Joke. 

 

In his role as deputy at the Tourist Police Bureau Surachate has been all over the news busting a variety of criminals from call center gangs to rogue tuk-tuk drivers, illegal guides to Nigerian romance scammers. 

 

Recently he was closely involved in the Koh Tao alleged rape case. 

 

The Thai press follows his every word and speculation is rife that one day he will move into politics. 

 

For now the question is whether he will be elevated to the top job at the tourist police, while some sources in Thailand are even suggesting that Surachate may be in line for the head of immigration.

 

The reach of the tourist police is far wider than what it says on the tin. Since a reclassification of the police divisions the tourist police enjoy a far greater role in the police hierarchy than in the past, notes Thaivisa.

 

In other changes to top positions INN speculated that Lt Gen Chaiwat Ketworachai might replace Pol Gen Dechnarong Suthicharnbancha as a deputy of the RTP. 

 

Other commanding roles up for grabs are at Central Investigation and the coveted Metropolitan Police that covers Bangkok. 

 

Maj-Gen Suthin Sapphuang looks sure for the former, said INN, but the chief of Bangkok's force looks to be a straight fight between Lt Gen Suthipong Wongpin and Lt Gen Apichart Sirisit. 

 

The present incumbent is retiring from the civil service thus making the position vacant.

 

In total 12 commanders positions are available in the shake-up. 

 

The meeting of Prawit and top police will take place at 2pm today.

BANGKOK — Over at Thailand’s Immigration Bureau, the word is out: Bad guys out, Big Joke in.

 

A police commander whose favorite pastime involves rounding up foreigners on expired visas was appointed Thursday to lead the bureau, which processes more than 35 million people through Thailand’s borders and ports of entry annually.

'Burning question'? . . . hardly. Big Joke has done little of major significance, besides prove that he has a big mouth. After the Koa Tao rape/no rape fiasco, he should be rested for a year or two . . . just to let him calm down after his euphoria at the media-melee that his KT ins and outs caused. The top Police job should be held by one of the sharpest chisels in the box, not the noisiest.

As for his other fancied direction, the Tourist Police, i.e. the friendly face of the Immigration Police, there again he, IMO, falls way short of the calibre of applicant that would even get a sniff  . . . in a developed country.

I'm sure that influence and contributions (within and to the cause of policing) will be significant deciding factors.

 

Of course, in some circles, being known as "Big Joke" (rice porridge or otherwise) would not sit well with appointment to the top job...

After arresting a few overstayers and a bunch of mostly black people, but no really serious villains that I can recall, I am not quite sure why his name is even in the picture. He does do a good press conference to show off his petty criminals, but as for real police work, I think he is, as his name says, just a big joke.

Whether the Koh Tao rape case is true or not, by denying it before investigating anything and threatening the alleged victim at the same time, he has shown he does not have the first clue about really being a copper, let alone a top one.

This has to be a joke!!

He is nothing but a big joke, with a big mouth.

All this c++p about big joke arrested drug, dealers, long time over stayers etc, etc, is nonsense.

Local plod have already caught them, then the clown turns up with his camera crew and lackies, making a good photo op, must really p++s off the police who have done the work already.

It won't be who is most suitable for the top post,

but who will offer the most,as happens in most

Government appointments here.

A Thai friend of mine is a commander in the navy and one day I jokingly asked him, when would he become an admiral. Ten years he said. When I asked how he was so sure, his reply was simple. Everybody does.

Of course he deserves the top job, he’s xenophobic, he persecuted those who posted pictures that upset the govt, he tried to discredit and blame a rape victim in order to protect the almighty tourist cash cow and chases publicity 24/7.

Thai media from this morning say he "IS" the new immigration boss.

"appointed Thursday".

There was a major reshuffle ceremony at 14:00 where 255 posts were nominated.

Please please please its getting on a bit more of than being a big joke now.he just flies around the country jumping in on crimes already solved in most cases and stealing the limelight.a pathetic puppet and getting promotion for it.

The free advertising he got from the news. Free people brain washing. He did nothing other than being on the news and get the credit of many arrests....he's just a very big joke...

He is Prawit's friend and the positions "will be decided by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan". I'm just glad he isn't in for the Anti Corruption Commission..., oops here I am, giving Prawit ideas again.

Get used to it, he is the immigration boss.

 

Obviously he was promised this post long ago.

Some were wondering why a tourist police deputy was so busy with immigration topics.

Now you know.

Did he ever make it to the streets of South London? I've not seen anything in the press since it was first announced. He might miss out if he didn't as it's hardly an Immigration issue.

I think they wanted him out of PD before he got too close to upsetting the Apple cart there. Sooner or later he would have hit upon some sensitive areas. 

Make him the chief of police. It would be appropriate to have a big joke run the circus.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and hope that he'll make a positive impact. One of his first tasks should be visiting Chiang Mai Immigration and sorting that out. No.1 a big increase in personnel to adequately cater for demand and No.2 a close look at possible corruption in the ranks.

Then he'd simply become an upper level bureaucrat instead of a celebrity figure.  I wonder which role he personally wants? 

Should we be worried ?  I mean if he gets the immigration job he has to make his mark, a new hoop to jump through perhaps, another useless form, a new regulation etc.

Then again he could equally make his mark by streamlining the service, making fewer forms to complete, fewer hoops for us to leap through. Let's hope!

If big Joke gets the job, I hope the first thing he does, is to sort out Chiang Mai's immigration bad record,

The only person I became aware of here, who was ever appointed to a high position based on expertise and qualification. ‘Thaironically’ that’s exactly why she lost her job… In her book, Pornthip reiterates problems with state authorities in obtaining justice for those subject to injustice.

Good luck to the guy, certainly fast tracked to the Job, biggest challenge will be avoiding too much undue influence from the sponsors.

Does he get any complimentary watches thrown in with the job ?
