Latest glitch for UK's May: botched party app lets public log in as cabinet ministers

BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party apologised on Saturday after releasing a phone app for the annual party conference that let members of the public log in as senior government ministers and view their personal details.

Dawn Foster, a columnist with the Guardian newspaper, discovered that a flaw in the app allowed users to log in as anyone attending the party conference, simply by entering an email address.

It meant the mobile phone numbers of all those attending the four-day event - journalists, party members and lawmakers, including senior government ministers - could be accessed. On Twitter, Foster showed how she had been able to log into the system as former foreign secretary Boris Johnson.

"It's let me login as Boris Johnson, and just straight up given me all the details used for his registration," she wrote. "I'm the most tech illiterate person alive, and I've done this, imagine there are plenty more security bugs."

The loophole in the app was closed after the security breach was pointed out to the party but not before the details of some politicians had been accessed and in some instances changed.

A journalist from the BuzzFeed website said at least two cabinet ministers had received prank calls from the public as a consequence.

"The technical issue has been resolved and the app is now functioning securely," a Conservative spokesman said. "We are investigating the issue further and apologise for any concern caused."

Last year, May's major conference speech descended into chaos after she suffered a coughing fit, a prankster gained access to the stage to hand her the form given to sacked employees, and some letters of her party's slogans dropped to the ground from a sign on the stage behind her as she spoke.

"I think people will see a really impressive conference all round this year," Conservative Party Chairman Brandon Lewis told Sky News before news of the security breach was revealed.

Glitch aside this is Johnson's chance to grow a pair and challenge May for the leadership.  Will he do it or just keep making his cowardly attacks from the side-lines?  His Canada style plan has been shown to be useless but still he just keeps trying to undermine May and by doing so undermining the party.

Nobody in their right mind would try to be leader until Brexit (leave or stay) is over.

Totally agree but we are talking about Boris here!  He is desperate to become PM and the sensible thing to do would be to wait until May has self destructed.  Brexit will be her downfall whichever way it ends up.  But then why is Boris lobbing hand grenades from the side lines? Now he has called May's Brexit plan deranged and preposterous.  Why would you do that if not planning a leadership challenge?

And these are the people organizing and arranging Brexit, the most consequential public policy shift in generations.

Fills you with confidence, doesn't it?

Yep. And they've got their finger on Britain's nuclear weapons too.

Nice warm feeling ain't it.

The tories couldn’t organise an excessive drinking party in a brewery at present.

Absolute joke of a govt.

One of, if not the worst, government ever. And likely to screw the UK up for generations, apart from the top tier. Which always seems to suit some tories,

To keep himself relevant. To remain in the public eye. To leave options open in case things pan out in unexpected ways. He's many things, but daft about politics (and specifically, party politics) isn't one of them.

... but, but great in diplomatic .............. (ehm) failures! Among them

Maybe in this time of split nations the Brits need a second Trump on the top of their government. A strong man without any glitches  :cheesy:

It's always good to see that remainers will resort to any desperate measures to support their cause...

A 'glitch app' "let public log in as a cabinet member"?? ????

Not that I care.  The population needs to know the truth - as told by those politicians who didn't know they were being recorded.

The politicians that knew they were being recorded..... - nothing more to say....
