BANGKOK, 1 October 2018 2018 (NNT) – The Bank of Thailand has issued a report on the Economic and Monetary Conditions in August 2018, saying that the Thai economy continued to gain further traction from both domestic and external demand.

Private consumption indicators expanded from the same period last year in most spending categories. However, spending on non-durable goods was unchanged largely due to last year’s high base effect stemming from accelerated spending on alcoholic beverages and tobacco before the increase in excise tax. Fundamental factors supporting overall purchasing power remained favorable, benefitting from the continued improvement in household income.

The value of merchandise exports expanded at a moderate pace with growth of 5.8% from the same period last year. Excluding gold, the value of merchandise exports grew by 9.6%, and expanded in most product groups.

Public spending, excluding transfers, expanded in both capital and current spending. Capital spending expanded from disbursement for construction and purchase of machinery by the Royal Irrigation Department and the Department of Rural Roads. In addition, current spending slightly expanded from increased expenditure on goods and services and civil servants’ remuneration.

The number of foreign tourist arrivals registered a moderate growth of 3% compared to the same period last year. This was mainly from an increase in the number of Malaysian tourists due to the Hari Raya Haji long holiday. Moreover, the number of Hong Kong, Japanese, and Indian tourists continued to expand, but the number of Chinese tourists contracted after the Phuket tour boat sinking.

Dropped 11.77%

Or about 116,000 Chinese tourists. That can hurt small hotels.

Be nice if the Baht wasn't so strong.

I'm interested to know the divide in wealth between the top and bottom 20% of society and it's graph over the past 100 years. And what numbers  will cause a crack and downfall.

The 'economy' tells us how business is doing. Nothing at all about how society in general is managing on low pay.

More transparent than you might think:

  • Indicators look good on paper but discrepancy between rich and poor has continued to widen under the junta.
  • For the past four years, the results have been generally mixed with the majority of Thai people’s economic wellbeing remaining stagnant or worse.
  • Over these [past four] years, multiple polls have often suggested that the government’s economic management was not delivering results, especially among medium- to low-income groups.
