BANGKOK — Abhisit Vejjajiva won praise from his Pheu Thai rival Thursday after he resigned from his post as chairman of the Democrat Party.

Abhisit said he stepped down to make way for the upcoming vote on its top leadership seat, which three people are now contending. Former Pheu Thai MP Watana Muangsook said Abhisit set an admirable precedent and urged the military junta to do the same.

That's a shame, but what difference does it make anyhow? The dems aren't likely to make a dent in the status quo, even if they get a majority. The dems colluded to overthrow the government. What else do people need to know.

He's still running for leader of the Democrats and as is usual amongst 'honourable' leaders stood down from positions he held for the contest to be seen as playing fair.

But 'I'll be back', he's thinking . . . you can be sure of it. Having had his snout so deep in the trough and regardless of his present wealth, I cannot believe that this is a clean break. Call me a cynic if you wish but, in my view, Abhisit's just another lying Thai. I could name a few more, but discretion prevents me.

He's making a bid for Newcastle United  so won't have the time anymore.

Abhisit might talk to PTP about a position - boot polisher.

He has a lot of experience with military boots.

Sinking ship - it's obviously between Pheu Thai and the Establishment, there is no third option. Let's get real here. Not that I care. It's their country, let them get on with it. If I'm forced out then I'll go somewhere else, and take my money with me.

I expect old Marky to join up secretly with PT - his truer calling.

????

Probably going to lead a Thai consortium to buy his home town club Newcastle UTD.

Abhisit is one of those great 'what if's'

On paper he was the great hope. Raised in a Western democracy, fantastic education, he had all the credentials to make a transformative leader for Thailand.

Instead he chose the path to conform to his class and slip right into the elite status quo and perform the role he was supposed to do.

Rather sad, but I suspect rather predictable

Indeed.

I believe there was a time when he was the darling among scholars, media, pundits and particular circles of the population - which may have seen him as a reasoned light progressive in manner, looking to expand on a bright and solid future for Thailand.

Instead, he found the rabbit hole and was forced to play their game - as many have.

They don't have much choice.

Finally doing the right thing.
