lopburi3 Posted October 17, 2018 Share Posted October 17, 2018 You would go directly to an ophthalmologist for both diagnosis and treatment. Any hospital will have several on staff and probably, if found, a specialist to provide treatment. They are not normally removed until vision is impaired. They, in themselves, are not normally serious and removal is routine operation. But important to make sure you do not have other issues so ophthalmologist exam is good to have to make sure no glaucoma or other issues (which may be treatable). Rutnin Eye Hospital is probably the largest dedicated facility in Thailand and has been operating for decades. It is busy but very well organized in my experience and has experts in all areas of eye care and should not cost more than most other facilities. Cataracts do nto require treatment until they are interfering significantly with your vision and there is no particular advantage to knowing you are at an early stage with one. Thanks Sheryl. My brother told me his doctor said it's an advantage to detect it early , but maybe that's just to be aware it will become a problem later on. Yes, they can detect a host of problems including cataract, galucoma, retinal degeneration etc. It is a good idea to have a comprehensive eye exam every few years, more often if experiencing symptoms. An update on this I went to Rutnin as recommended by Sheryl. I did several tests and talked to 2 different doctors , they both studied my right eye , and one of them told me what I had was rare (double vision) . My right eye diagnosis : Monocular double vision + Irregular astigmatism. So I don't know how serious it is , the mono double vision is very irritating but it is something I have had since young age. Just like a shadow . But the other problem make my eye sight worse. And glasses will not correct it , my vision is 20/25 which is not a big issue , so I guess only surgery could help me. The opthalmic doctor advised that I have cataracts (I'm age 57), but also advised that I have Optical Ischemia, which came as a surprise. The doctor, who appeared to be in her 20's, seemed somewhat blasé about the Optical Ischemia and requested I come back in 6 months for another check up. So I would like to get a second opinion on the diagnosis as it seems to be a serious condition. tutsiwarrior Posted January 20, 2019 Share Posted January 20, 2019 I went to rutnin for an exam and a prescription to order glasses online from zenni last year...I have diabetes and I had a very pleasant and informative chat with the opthamologist who advised that I have cataracts but to not be alarmed as they presently don't interfere with my vision, cataracts are not unusual in older folks apparently...this had been a concern for me as my grandmother had cataracts requiring surgery for removal back in the 1950s...the procedure for cataract removal is less complicated these days... ivor bigun Posted January 20, 2019 Share Posted January 20, 2019 The one piece of advice i can give,is do not go to any of the private eye clinics 4 years ago i went to one in Pattaya ,long story short must have operation next week for cataract 52k charged 4k for drops est etc went for a second opinion at Satahip naval hospital, full battery of tests 900 baht.
