BANGKOK, 17th October 2018 (NNT) - The Ministry of Commerce reported that the global trade situation is still worrisome, and many countries have adjusted their investment plans in the emerging markets.

The Director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office, Pimchanok Vonkorpon, on Tuesday delivered a lecture on the impacts to Thailand from the trade war between the United States and China to trade promotion officials working in other countries.

Ms. Pimchanok said the global trade situation remains worrisome due to its fluctuation from the exchange rate, while Thailand's exports of oil-related products may benefit from this situation.

She said further that the global trade structure has now changed, and many countries have adjusted their investment plans by placing more importance on Asia and emerging countries. She said Thailand must therefore attract them to invest in its Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) project.

If US trade tariff trade war against China is prolonged, China's economic growth could slow substantially and its investment capital diminished to the extent that it will largely be required to sustained domestic growth. That will affect its availability for foreign investments, ie., Thailand's EEC, high speed trains, etc.

While Thailand will remain an important trade partner for China, Thailand may have to depend more on its own domestic investments to sustain Thailand's economic growth.

Against that scenario, Thai corporations will more likely to place their capital in other ASEAN economies that will return higher yields.
