Nine major dams at less than 60% capacity

BANGKOK, 17th October 2018 (NNT) - The Smart Water Operation Center (SWOC) has cited the need to manage water consumption more carefully as the quantity of water in nine major dams is now less than expected.

According to the SWOC, dams containing less than 60% of their capacity include Chiang Mai’s Mae Kuang Udom Thara Dam at 44%, Lampang’s Mae Mhok Dam at 32% , Nakhon Ratchasima’s Moon Bon Dam at 54%, Udon Thani’s Huai Luang Dam at 50% , Khon Kaen’s Ubonrat Dam at 35%, Buriram’s Lam Nang Rong Dam at 34%, Suphanburi’s Krasieaw Dam at 36%, Uthai Thani’s Thap Salao Dam at 30%, and Yala’s Bang Lang Dam at 59%.

Dams with less than 30% of water will supply only domestic consumption and enough to sustain the ecosystem.

Secretary-General of the Office of the National Water Resource Mr. Somkiat Prajamwong has held a meeting to find ways to handle runoffs in the west and south of Thailand as well as a possible drought crisis in summer.

According to the Meteorology Department, heavy rains have been forecast this weekend particularly in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces.

You could write a book on the clowns that run this country.the smart water operations centre,or the not very smart say the water is less than expected.not calculated, but wished or guessed is more like it.now it's time to promote big joke to admiral of the water office and send a gang of incompetent idiots to the good old post of inactive duties in the sky.each day I hope to hear something positive about Thailand but when I do it turns out to be fake news.even with the offer of help from other countries theres no hope I'm afraid to say.

And all that after literally months of heavy rains across the country, when all dams should be filled to the brim. Even worse, it's the same issue year after year after goddamn year. Nothing is being learned, nothing is being improved. But come March or April everybody is going to moan about the water shortage and push the blame around.

Smart Water Operation Center... one really can only shake the head in disbelief.

It would seem the level of incompetence has been watered down. Better luck next year guys.

The problem is that preventing flood and storing water are two opposing goals.

Store too much water you get flooding.. store too little and you get water shortage.

Plus this year the rains have been in different area's then usual.

Yes the Thais seem to have drained too much water from some dams again,

but do not fire those engineers and ones in control of the water levels, as

they are connected, somehow to someone important.

Geezer

It's quite simple really.keep your eye on water levels, keep your eye on the weather forecast and rainfall and adjust accordingly.not complete rocket science.i wonder if any of these people at the smart water operations centre have ever heard of mr Archimedes or eureka.

And the poor farmers who got forced to store the excess water and lost their crops now wont have any water to grow any now. But hey bangkok is happy.

Seems to be a uniquely thai problem. I guess other countries are just doing it all wrong.

Do tell me what tropical countries are doing it well.

The great thai apologist strikes again. Look it up yourself

The rain has been unseasonal and unpredictable for a bit longer than just this year.

The problem is all the dams are in the wrong place but there's a team from the engineering faculty at KMIT who are working on making some of the dams more portable to address the changing mobility of the rain in Thailand.

They'll get right onto it as soon as they've sorted Pattaya's perpetual flooding problem (again).

Your claiming something. you have to back that up, I am not making the claim that other tropical countries do well and have no problems you are. So do your own work yourself.

Burdon of proof is with the person claiming something not the one who says its not true.

Didn't they say that the major dams were close to 100% just a few weeks ago?

....and yet, these seasonal cycles have been around for ages and ages.

People have managed - in one form or another - as they always have and will.

Why are such natural matters political or social issues?

Invented to be for the most unenlightened.
