You cannot change the category of a non immigrant visa without going out to get a new visa.

If wanting to apply for a extension of stay at immigration it may be possible to apply any extension of stay since all that is required is a non immigrant visa entry.

If on a extension of stay you may be able to change the reason for it.

No.

What is the reason for changing your visa status?

The school could not get the permit to work in time. So being married with a child it was suggested I go ahead and get a non-o

Ok. It sounds like you've entered the country with a Non 'B' and were going to get an extension of stay based on your job/work permit.

Immigration, might, issue a 1 year extension of stay as a parent using the non 'B' visa.

Alternatively, if you need more time to get the work permit sorted, they could give you a 60 day extension of stay as a parent, after which you could apply for an extension based on your work.

Correct. The school could not get the work permit in time ( basically they said I need to get enrollment in an accredited uni teaching diploma course). In the meantime I have a a new contract with another school in a different province. I wanted to be able to use the non b for new school. The present non b does not mention the school but does say min buri ( Bangkok). The new school is in nakhonsawan. I am trying to figure out if I can do anything within country first. Your comments regarding the parent extension issue are extremely interesting. I am married legallyetc with a four year old girl. I tend to over analyze

For example I read here that I can in fact change to the non o from non b within country. Of course I want to believe that. So, rather than taking the tested and proven advice of Ubonjoe I am clinging to the hope that that is an option

You cannot change the category of your visa in the country. You have already entered the country and are asking about extending your stay. The qualification for extensions of stay is issued based on the type of visa (non-immigrant) and category ('B' - 'O').

You are the spouse/parent of a Thai so there is no reason why immigration couldn't issue you with an extension of stay as a spouse/parent using the category 'B' visa/entry; because as a spouse/parent of a Thai you can legally work (with a work permit) as long as you enter the country with a non-immigrant visa regardless of whether it's a category 'B' or 'O' visa.

It is in your best interests to have your permission (extension) issued on the basis of your spouse/child. That way if you change jobs or stop work your permission to stay is unaffected.
