Details have emerged of new immigration chief Maj Gen Surachate Hakparn's drive to achieve his stated aim: 7,000 foreigners out by the end of the month.

The latest "X-Ray Outlaw Foreigner" push targeted 265 places and netted 700 illegal foreigners.

Here is the league table of nationalities who overstayed published in the Immigration Bureau's website:

India                31

Myanmar         23

Cambodia       20

Laos                17

French              4

Germany          2

Russia              2

Cameroon        2

America           2

There were one each from eleven other countries namely the UK, China, Sweden, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Ireland, Czech Republic, Philippines, South Africa, Vietnam and the Netherlands.

Here are the top five over stayers:

Mrs Ra Yeun                      Cambodia     1969 days    had been living in Naratiwas

Patrick Ndang Phuh      Cameroon          1865             Surat Thani

Mohammed Masood Ali     India               1785            Undon Thani

Franciscus Jan Ijzerman    Netherlands   1562            Chaiyaphum

Alexandr Beloglazor          Russia             1104            Phuket

In illegal entry Myanmar beat all comers with a 103 tally while in offences deemed as "others" Thais hit pay dirt with 210.

The IB website did not say what "others" actually meant.

They also said that 104 over stayers were arrested. The numbers added up to 114, notes Thaivisa's maths department.

A guy from Cameroon staying 5 years in Surat Thani is pretty impressive as he would not be able to easily blend in within the community, especially if he were making a living in Thailand.

They need to put up TV screens around crowded areas with live updates on foreign overstayers. They can have the overstayers’ nationality table in the bottom right corner of the screens with real-time updates. Also, lots of rerun clips of BJ in military-looking attire banging his fist on his podium threatening illegal foreigners.

Yup, just imagine tens of thousands of Thais returning from Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan all at once, joined by tens of thousands more from the U.S., Canada and the European Union and supplemented by further thousands from the Middle East. The Thai government would of course immediately complain how unfair it all is.

Now having said that, I fully understand that Thailand doesn't want foreigners living here illegally, sometimes for years and years. It's the country's good right to enforce its visa rules and every foreigner better make sure they do so in line with immigration laws. But then again, it goes both ways; and my hunch is there are way more Thais staying abroad illegally than there are foreigners living in Thailand without appropriate visas.

Thais are notorious for working illegally on tourist visas in places like US. It's almost a guarantee that if you meet a Thai working in abroad in restaurants, massage, labor, agriculture, they are illegal. I REALLY wish other countries would publish some numbers to embarrass these arrogant officials. Publish all their names, too!

Ok ... do the job against people who do not respect the law. That's fine.

But how about making things more easy on visa issues and extension of stay issues  for the quality expats/retirees living in Thailand, who wish to do things as per the law ?

Why make life so difficult in some areas for the foreigners (meeting the requirements of stay)  wanting to extend their sojourn with excessive formalities, red tape or disgraceful queues lasting hours,  etc ?

What's the point ? In that case why not just plainly close the borders and make it clear that only a certan quota of foreigners will be allowed, if you dislike that much the farangs and retirees legally wanting to stay  ?

Because they are preparing for the next slogan; Rich people in; Poor people out.
