Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and four other people died when the aircraft crashed on Saturday evening. Witnesses said they saw it just clear the stadium before it spiralled out of control and crashed in a fireball. The five people were on board the helicopter when the incident happened. While formal identification has not yet taken place, they are believed to be Leicester City Football Club chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, two members of his staff, Nursara Suknamai and Kaveporn Punpare, pilot Eric Swaffer and passenger Izabela Roza Lechowicz. The force has been working to ensure that all the relevant next of kin had been informed prior to this information being confirmed publicly. The aircraft came down in a car park near the stadium shortly after 8.30pm with Leicestershire Police, East Midlands Ambulance Service and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service all responding to the incident. No one else is believed to have been injured. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is leading the investigation into the accident and a cordon remains in place at the scene while enquiries continue. Leicestershire Police will be supporting the AAIB in its investigation, liaising closely with Leicester City Football Club as enquiries continue. Superintendent Steve Potter said: “This is an incredibly tragic incident in which five people are understood have lost their lives. “Emergency services were immediately on scene when the crash happened, working to put out the fire and gain access to the helicopter in attempts to reach those inside. Despite those efforts, there were no survivors. “The AAIB is now leading an investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash and investigators will remain at the scene to complete their initial enquiries. It is likely to take several days to fully complete the necessary work and to safely deal with the scene of this tragic accident, during that time we ask that both the media and public resist speculating around the cause of the crash. “We appreciate that both the public and media were keen to be updated on the circumstances and to confirm if those on board the helicopter had survived, but before any detail could be issued publicly, it was vital that all immediate next of kin were informed of the tragic outcome. As our communities will understand, this was a matter that needed to be handled sensitively and with dignity, with the families of the deceased being at the heart of our response, which involved other agencies. “Our thoughts today are with the families of those who have sadly died, with Leicester City Football Club, and with both football supporters and the wider local community who have all been impacted by the events of last night and the news that those on board the aircraft have not survived.” The AAIB and Leicestershire Police are asking that anyone who witnessed the crash to call 101 quoting incident number 546 of 28 October 2018. Vichai bought the unfancied side from central England in 2010 and went on to stun the soccer world by beating odds of 5,000/1 to win the Premier League title in 2016 in what amounted to a sporting fairytale. The father of four and founder of duty-free giant King Power International was a huge favourite with the club's fans. The man was a titan in Leicester and highly respected not only for the football, which is his legacy to the city as he achieved what was thought impossible. He took a team that was 5000-1 outsiders and no-hopers in the football world, and then realized a dream and brought immense pride to the city, which will live on alongside his name for generations. He was known to be a kind, quiet and humble gentleman respected by all those who knew him. As a fellow football fan, I want to thank him and his family for what they brought to English football. He adopted Leicester as a city and gave vast amounts of money both to the Leicester Royal Infirmary ( in the millions of pounds ) He also donated large sums of money for the benefit of the University of Leicester as well as football academies and various charities. I am sure there are many other causes he donated to that we know nothing about. He was known during matches to give warm food and football scarves to fans in the Stadium on cold days, free of charge. with his son assisting him in making the fans feel like a big family. Such kindness, unheard of in the football world, for a Chairman to involve himself with fans at the grassroots level, only goes to show how much he will be missed. England is already calling him the best chairman any UK football club has ever had. He will be missed tremendously. Deepest condolences to his family, the staff who died with him on the plane and the two pilots. RIP. A reminder that any thing can happen to anybody at any time, rich or poor. Lead life to the full now. This is a terrible accident. The late Chairman was probably the most loved and respected football club chairman in the UK. He was adored by the fans because of the way he treated them, interacted with them and his leadership was a shining example. A very generous man who gave millions to local Leicester charities including a GBP 2 million recent donation towards a new children's hospital. I've seen much mourning across the Leicester community not just football fans; and many UK and European football clubs are sending their condolences to Leicester.
