I found one for 500 that leaves at 8 am. Is there a bus leaving from one of the bus terminals or elsewhere that is cheaper and reliable?

No, I prefer the more expensive comfortable ones from Giant Ibis. 1000 baht.  

But you can probably find a minivan service that will take you to the border for 200 baht and then you can get another transport from the border to SR.
