Video: High speed trains coming to Thailand - forget 60kph new trains will top 250 kph!

TNN reported that Thai trains with an average speed of a pedestrian 60 kilometers per hour would soon be a thing of the past.

 

Government initiatives would see trains running between the main airports at top speeds of 250 kph. 

 

TNN said that Thailand was coming into the modern era with train travel set to be fast and efficient. 

 

An upbeat news report containing computer visualizations showed what was coming soon. 

 

They were referring to the links between Don Muang and U-Tapao near Pattaya via Suvarnabhumi airport. 

 

Speeds in the metropolitan area would be around 160 kph but after Bangkok's main airport heading for Pattaya top speed would be reached. 

 

The 220 kilometer line will be Thailand's first high speed network and is part of the present government's plans for the EEC or Eastern Economic Corridor.

"News" out of nowhere, this TNN seems bored.

I have little hope that I will see it during my lifetime.

The important word here is 'coming'. Not here yet, planned for the future and no idea of quite when. With Thailand apparent lack of safety features and proper maintenance speeds of 250kph could have the trains competing with the cars for impressive wreckage.

I for one would not be using them here.

 

Imagine the possible catastrophes with a train travelling at that speed and then you've got some goon on a bike in the middle of nowhere trying to cut across the track. 

I often read reports on here that quote mistakenly that a train hit a car while crossing the rails.

 

If these speeds become a reality in Thailand, I believe that the trains indeed go hit cars, far away from the rails

Such a train has to be fully fenced.

Will have no level crossings.

Pass over or under roads, running on pillars.

Bloody expensive, throwing billions and billions at a project with little effect for common people.

At the same time rundown buses held together by paint creep on shaky roads.

I live right next to the railway line on the way to U-Tapao airport  the line is not even dual track yet (dual bit stops in north Pattaya) let alone any sign at all they are building the elevated rail line

for a 250KPH train....  I would go for the cheaper  "intercity 125"  like they use in the UK

Of course we're having it.

Just look at the Sino-Thai railway:

"a total of 13 construction contracts for the Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima route would be open for bidding in 2018 so that construction could be completed and the system become operational in 2021."

 

That's in three years. Isn't that fantastic!

Why focusing on linking 3 airports?

When high speed trains are built abroad, it is generally in order to link major cities, not airports!

 

Having said that, only the youngest among us (below 20) may ever see such trains in action.

 

The main road linking Sisaket to Ubon crosses the rail line once, close to the border between both provinces.

 

They have been busy building an overpass at this junction for over 2 years!

 

And the works are far from finished...the whole thing could end up taking 3 to 4 years!

 

One can only imagine how many decades it would require to build a safe high speed line...starting with the usual land expropriations which, themselves, could require a few decades...

Have been talking about it for years and like everything else with this junta government nothing happens. The elite had a ground breaking ceremony and party a year or so ago but still haven't yet got around to calling tenders; still held up at envelope negotiation stage.

The hard part of setting ticket prices has been done, the rest will be easy. 

This story is nothing more than pre-election propaganda. 

Someone up there must have been to japan lately and saw what they have there and want the same here,, Thailand is not ready for a weaponized train system, and so can't even to phatom what huge preparations needed for something like that to run... but that doesn't stop people from dreaming...

making a good infrastructure with 160km/h electric trains will be already a big achievement for the country... They should stop dreaming of passing from riding a cow to drive a Ferrari, this is how tragedy are happening...

Believe it or not there is already a Pattaya train station....well in fact just a sign and strip of concrete..dont even know if the train actually stops there [emoji47]

Tony would agree this with you.a  big billboard on the main entrance of the station with his photo  (4 meters wide 6 meter high) of how he looked 30 years ago..????

Although hitting something at 160 will ensure it's over all faster.

I predict horrific accidents on a rather frequent basis given the generally lazy attitude regarding thorough technical maintenance and some impatient folks' tendency to cross any railway line whenever and wherever they please.
