BANGKOK, 10 November 2018 (NNT) - Authorities are calling on the general public to fly lanterns during Yipeng and Loy Krathong festivals only within specific periods of time to prevent possible accidents in aviation.

The Aeronautical Radio of Thailand's Vice President on Provincial and Facilities Administration Chumnan Ruechai said the company is calling on the general public to adhere to safety measures when flying lit lanterns during Yipeng and Loy Krathong festivals.

Lit paper lanterns are usually released into the night sky in the northern region. Lanterns are afloat in the sky as hot air from the burning fuel-dipped paper roll inside. Manufacturers of such lanterns have enabled them to fly higher and longer, causing potential risks to aviation and fires on the ground after they have fallen from the sky.

Chiang Mai province has recently announced a restriction on the release of lanterns on the night of 22 November 2018, and 23 November 2018, from 7.00 p.m. to 1.00 a.m. Smoke lanterns can be flown during 10.00 a.m. - 12.00 a.m. on 22 November 2018. The violation of such restriction may result in a maximum of three years in prison or a maximum of 60,000 baht in fine or both.

The Aeronautical Radio of Thailand has coordinated with the public and private sectors to strictly abide by the safety measures in favor of the aviation and airline passengers.

Sorry, but few will adhere to such ridiculous and unnecessary restrictions.

Many will participate in this activity as they see fit -

Being a bear of very little brain, I'm having trouble following the restrictions. Does it mean you cannot release the lanterns between 7pm and 1am?

If I've understood the times correctly, I thought the point was to avoid aircraft? OK, there must be flights up to, say, around 10pm, are there flights after that time too?

What are smoke lanterns - is that the same animal? If so, I've never heard them described as that before.

Why can they be released during the day - do they not pose the same threat to aircraft in the mornings?

edit: Just noticed it says "12:00a.m." - that's midnight. Doesn't that overlap with the times they can't be released?

Those lanterns will be flying all over BKK.....like every other year...And i hear/see airplanes about every minute...so they better close the airports during that festival.

of course there are flights after 10pm, and I don't think people are interested in releasing the lanterns in the daytime if you ever seen one you will know why.

as for the other comments: bkk cannot be compared, it's far away while cnx is smack inside the city. and in the past couple of years there has been a drastic reduction of flying lanterns (thank goodness), let's hope it works also this year.

there is so little regard here for order (laws) as well as safety that asking the thai public to police itself is fruitless

I in general agree with you however I have noticed fewer and fewer lanterns the last several years.
