Thai and Malaysian officials have jointly resumed a search for the body of a Malaysian drug suspect who jumped into the Sungai Kolok River to escape an arrest on Monday night after a small amount of drugs were found on him.

Thai police said the suspect, Muhammad Sayudi bin Navi (not official spelling), 38, a resident of Malaysia's Kelantan state, jumped into the river at 8.30pm on Monday night at the pier linking Narathiwat and Kelantan in Sungai Kolok district.

He jumped after Thai police found heroin inside a straw and a meth pill in his wallet at the pier checkpoint.

Thai police alerted Kelantan officials and a joint team was dispatched to search for the body. After an hours-long effort, officials of the two countries called off the search on Monday night due to the darkness and a strong river current.

The search resumed on Tuesday morning.

The Malaysian had a Thai wife, Ropiya Kaseng, 40, who is serving a jail term in Narathiwat Prison on a drug conviction.
