U.S. judge orders White House to restore press pass to CNN's Acosta

Featured Replies

^ Perhaps I am not making the point clearly enough, or you are trying to dodge the obvious? But if all 30,000 journalists who have this constitutional right like Jim Acosta have a 4 minute Q and A with Trump then the press conference would have lasted for 83 days and nights, and the front row of chairs would be about 6 kilometers long. Sounds a mite implausible?

I put it to you that Trump has been very generous with Acosta, allowing his frequent sitting in the front row, and freely allowing Acosta to hog the mic at the expense of other journos present. Sad to see this generosity abused. Truth be told, after his appalling showboating and insincere behavior shouting at Trump from the back of a crowded room when he clearly could not be heard by Trump, playing for the CNN cameras, and causing a nuisance to other reporters - he should have been permanently banned back then. I dare anybody to watch his carrying on here and not cringe with embarrassment.

I don't think I'm the one missing the obvious. What is implausible, is that all the 30,000 journalists you refer to, would ever want, or apply for White House press passes. Not all journalists are White House correspondents, some cover other parts of the news.

It's up to each individual news organisation (not the White House) to decide which of their journalists should have press passes. As far as I know, there may already be a limit set by the White House as to how many White House press passes are allowed in total and if there is, that would be a perfectly reasonable thing to do, in my opinion - because of the practical problems you mention, that could be caused if there were too many. There may also be a limit set for each organisation, based on their size (again, that would make sense to me - if you only have 10 journalists on staff, you don't need 50 press passes).

But the thing is, it's not up to to White House to decide which individual may or may not have a press pass - or at least, as the Appeals Court judges put it, not "arbitrarily or for less than compelling reasons."

So if CNN wants to assign one of their available press passes to Jim Acosta, who is after all, their Chief White House correspondent, then that is entirely their prerogative and (unless there is a compelling reason and they follow due process) the government shouldn't be preventing CNN from doing that.

I put it to you that you misunderstand the word, “generous”.

Well, the article is from 2014, so I am not sure it's relevant and I am not sure you can compare a 'chill' to the persecution that Trump lays on the press.

Unlike Obama President Trump hasnt turned the Alphabet Agencies loose on the press, he just insults and belittles them. Thats not a chill, just bad for their egos.

Forcing the return of the press pass to this activist was not a wise decision.

On the contrary, the press pass never should have been taken in the first place. Pushing back is only way to keep this ignoramus in check. Otherwise he'll go full on petty tyrant with the biggest military in the history of the world. NOT a pleasant thought.

So funny to see little Adam Schitt (D-CA) talking about the fact that Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker was not approved by the Senate, but not mentioning the fact that Bob Mueller (who is highly conflicted) was not approved by the Senate!

deplorable and pathetic for a man in his position - I feel for all the American people

This was related to another of Trump's gems, but perfectly applies here too , from retired 3-star General Mark Hertling : " “What I would say in terms of my reaction is we can never become immune to this kind of narrative, to this kind of jackassery,”

Press conferences are by invitation yes no?  Under what laws does the think he has the right to get things restored, never mind being invited in the first place?  If I were Trump, I would quickly comply with the court order.  Then I would simply not give any press conferences for the next 6 months.  Let the press corps sort things out.  Or if then the court for some reason compels the President to hold a press conference, fine.  Let the people in, then stand there for 15 minutes and say absolutely nothing.  The right of free speech to not say anything.  There are lots of ways to handle this disrespectful punk who thinks he is so important and to show such disrespect for the Office of the President.  Time to enforce such standards of behavior

White House permanently restores CNN correspondent Jim Acosta's press pass, backs away from contentious legal fight

https://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/ny-pol-white-house-acosta-press-pass-fight-20181119-story.html

But it's not truly over from link:

Existing rules already in place: The rules state that journalists at White House press conferences will, if called upon, “ask a single question” and then yield the floor to other reporters, unless President Trump or other administration officials specifically permit a follow-up question.

But now a new rule: press passes can be revoked as a consequence of violating them.

Again, no mention of Due Process of Law.

Trump lost to CNN and will continue his hostility towards CNN to bait press violations.

The white house press room is for journalists to ask questions and report answers, not for self appointed pompous obnoxious narcissistic agenda driven ratings addicted media starlets to preen for the Camera.
