The Royal Thai Police will deploy 55,000 policemen to keep security at some 200 Loy Krathong venues around the country on Thursday night, a deputy national police chief said on Monday.

Pol General Chalermkiat Srivorakan, deputy police commissioner general, spoke to reporters after chairing a video conference with the Metropolitan Police Bureau, the Narcotics Suppression Bureau and nine provincial police bureaus to prepare for ensuring security for the Loy Krathong night.

He said there will be some 200 venues for Loy Krathong celebrations around the country, with 30 of them will considered major venues.

Four of the major venues are located in Bangkok – Asiatique riverside shopping mall, Icon Siam, Rama VIII Bridge and the Chulalongkorn University campus.

He said about 20,000 revellers are expected at Asiatique, 50,000 at Icon Suam, 8,000 at Rama VIII Bridge and 5,000 at Chulalongkorn University.

Chalermkiat said he has instructed all bureaus to make sure that entertainment venues in their jurisdiction prevent people under 20 from entering the venues.

He said the police would strictly enforce the bans on firecrackers and fireworks. Celebrants will not be allowed to release flying lanterns outside the permitted areas. Those firing guns into the air or driving while intoxicated will also face arrests.

Apart from the 55,000 deployed police officers to be deployed, another 10,000 will be kept on standby, Chalermkiat said.

Be careful when wearing bullet proof vests - you may get arrested for possession of a war weapon.

  • Sounds like the Loy Krathong festivities will be a war zone this year...Please dont forget to wear your camouflage clothing and bullet prof vests....

  • Ha ha! You'll end up being arrested if you do! IIRC isn't a 'bullet proof vest' regarded by Thai law as a 'war weapon'? A journalist was convicted of of wearing one while covering a Bangkok distu

And where are all these policemen when we need them, 65000 all told. (Wonder what the 10,000 on standby will be doing) 200 venues. Do the mathS yourself......OK a lot will be at the 'major' venues. But I guess someone has to arrest the drunk drivers and gun shooters.

"Those firing guns into the air or driving while intoxicated will also face arrests."

So under normal circumstances, you wouldn't get arrested?[emoji23]

Perhaps it's a double-whammy, and you get arrested for both - firing the gun and being drunk.

Wonder who will be able to shoot straight?

They treat this as a national emergency, or a threat to Kingdom. Someone needs to tell them it's a holiday, most beautiful Thai holiday!

Sounds like a lot of fun ---

I think I'll just stay home, order a pizza and watch a good movie.

Yep, LK used to be a wild night out, now there's too much peace and happiness to bother.

Aren't these social and spiritual occasions grand?

Couldn't be naturally functional without the stated presence of promoted militarism/para-militarism.

Happiness to the people in charge.  (Everyone else? Not so much.)

Aaaahh. damn!

Gone are the good ol' days, with all the drunken Loi Krathong- brawls, that happened every year and all the looting and ...what was that?!

Oh right...that never happened!

:coffee1:

An average of 275 RTP at each venue?? And the extra 10,000 RTP on standby?? Surely their math is wrong again probably x10..

What a great time to rob a bank!

Grossly "over the top". Do they have intelligence on possible terrorist attacks?

55,000 police to guard 200 Loy Krathong venues nationwide,,,,, Wouldn't it be better that the cops try to stop the Killing/ carnage on the roads instead ?

Going out with a video camera just to capture RTP working , will be a first, any events I have seen the RTP hide away hoping nothing happens and if it does, they swarm out and deal with it. Generally just being there is not in their rule-book , hiding and sitting drinking water, coffee, beer etc is the norm . I know I have seen them doing just that  !!

"Do they have intelligence?" would be the right question!

Overtime?

Too much control and interference

Typically the Thai way of managing certain issue, which is a great waste of manpower.

Not actually a lot of police coverage when considering the amount of venues and predicted attendances.

Hardly. Do the maths and think again.
