Famous around the world for its fresh and sometimes fiery flavours, Thailand’s street food is nevertheless in need of an upgrade, according to the Tourism Minister.

Weerasak Kowsurat said on Tuesday he would hold talks with the Public Health Ministry and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration on how to upgrade quality of dishes sold by street vendors in the capital.

He revealed plans to invite representatives of the two agencies to discuss how to ensure street foods are hygienic by offering advice on how to store ingredients and how to properly clean utensils.

Weerasak said his ministry would also work with municipalities in provinces to boost the quality of street food in other cities around the country.

He said the Tourism Ministry would launch an awareness campaign for tourists, explaining the characteristics of each dish to help them get the most out of eating on the street.

Citing the latest available figures, Weerasak said that as of 2016 there were 103,000 street food outlets in Thailand, constituting 69 per cent of all food shops in the country.

  • Same here.  I've had food poisoning twice.  Both times from international fast food chains here in Thailand.  In 12 years I've never been sick from eating food from a street vendor or a mom & pops

Hold up there.

Before we even get to the tasty bits how about the authorities check that all the vendors are using proper grease traps to avoid polluting the ground water with bloody "grease"

Unbeknown to many it is 20 times more difficult to treat than sewerage, but please don't start me on that one.

High speed trains,,,,,  YEP,  sewerage infrastructure don't be silly you cant see it underground

As well as nana's these sellers who also do GM Melons that are partly out in the open have to be marked down under hygiene rules for not having ( velvet ) gloves on when handling nana's ..

Please Tourist Ministry just walk away. Involve yourselves in something that needs fixing. Need any ideas?

...and in a posh hotel restaurant the idea of mandatory daily oil change for street vendors was born.

This is good news.

Improving the hygiene of street food is an excellent topic for them to work on.

Ironically, the only time I have ever had food poisoning, (infection of the intestine) was when I ate lunch at a big name restaurant in Bangkok. Unfortunately hygiene is completely out of sight at some places when you go indoors to eat.

The best 'upgrade' would be for the government to stop interfering with street vendors altogether.  They were doing just fine before 2014.

Happiness to the people in charge (not so much for everyone else).

Do something about the street vendors abuse of plastic bags and foam bowls and containers..while you're at it...

All they need to do is add more MSG! It's good for the brain too! yum yum.????

Why. Because they want to explain to tourist what street food dishes there are?  Maybe little brochures or cards to hang up to show what kho man gai is, so I can get my food faster without having to stand behind some clueless person who didn't even bother looking on the internet as to what a dish is try to discuss their particular needs and spices or whatever to someone that doesn't speak a speck of English.

Quit beating around the bush......Just come straight out and say you want all street food gone....Just say you want street food deader than a Dodo bird.......Just say we want all street food every where deader than deader than dead and gone forever....

Yea right in your pipe dream maybe...

Good luck with that one.. the world thinks Thai food is sensational, until you arrive & see the real Thai cuisine instead of the 5 star hotel offerings, go out on the street and smell the real deal

just one mass fry-up covered in sugar !!!

Follow the business crowd when buying street food.  They do not get paid when they

are sick, so they eat at the best vendors..

Geezer

Fresh out of the Wok or fryer. Good.

Lots of turnover. Good.

Lots of Thais. Good

Except:

Out of steel bins sitting: bad,

Unless:

Steaming hot curry with heat underneath: good.

Does this mean soon it'll be prohibited to just  wipe off dishes, silverware  and glasses in the street gutter with cold water?

Who knows , next food stall sellers will  be expected to somehow wash their hands after taking a crap.    ????
