BANGKOK — The fight over who will profit from medical cannabis – not the patients but the patents – is underway with lawmakers slamming bureaucrats for putting corporate interests over public benefit.

Following wide speculation that foreign pharma is seeking to dominate the potential market before it even exists, the commerce minister yesterday confirmed that at least 31 patent applications for medical marijuana have been filed to the Intellectual Property Department by foreign multinationals.

Couldn’t you just see the P brothers with a bong and joint in hand if they had cancer? They probably would be the first to partake behind the scenes out of Public eye.

Cannabis cures cancer now?

I think that there will be something similar to the Thai Tobacco Monopoly set up to control the production and sale of medicinal cannabis in Thailand.

And that may be the best way to do things, at least until the total legalisation of the drug.

Maybe in Thailand as almost everything has benefits in their labels.

Why would the patients make a profit from their medical treatments?

Apart from selling it on, that is...

I think there are reasons to believe that's what they do for a long time already as a  preventive measure.

Lots and lots and lots of money to be made here. No one should be surprised there will be massive fighting over these types of (in) formalities.

Few Americans are are in are in the region making deals since early this year.I met one who has signed agreement with Cambodia and near concluding a thai deal. Production is to be exported though.

And make money from it ,,, totally greed,,,,

When you think about it, it was a criminal cartel supplying the market up until now. Perhaps what comes next will be better?

I'm bored already.... Thailand will monopolise it somehow so they get all the rewards, no way they will let this new industry slip into foreign hands .

You cannot blame these companies, they have spent time and energy seperating the different componets from the plant and getting different results. My daughter has RA and with that is a lot of pain originally she was on opioids which whould give her about 4 hours sleep at night now she has two different cannabis extracts a daytime which she takes it helps the pain but she doesn't get hi from it. There is also the night time which she takes and that knocks her out for a good nights sleep.

It isn't about grabbing a couple of joints and having a hit at this stage of the game

try to keep big pharma out of this, they got this banned in the first place because there was no profit in it, now they want in because there is profit to be made.

And the beneficial owners of the said foreign company are from?

EDIT: Huh, Japanese and British companies were mentioned in the article. That's a bit of a surprise. Can't blame them for trying.
