Filmmaker begins shooting drama of 'Wild Boars' rescue

Tom Waller, a Thai filmmaker with Irish heritage, has started filming a movie featuring the multinational operation to rescue the “Wild Boars” football team and their deputy coach from the flooded Tham Luang cave in July.

 

 

The film, called “The Cave, Nang Non”, captures the tense international efforts to rescue the 13 members of the team, that gripped the world's attention for days.

 

The youngsters were praised for their bravery throughout their ordeal and rescuers were lauded for their successful life-threatening efforts to reach them.

 

Thai former marine Saman Kunan lost his life during the mission. 

 

Waller told foreign media recently: “We want to tell the story of those brave people who selflessly risked their lives to save the boys and their coach. To do it right we need to be as accurate as possible and that is why we are enlisting the help of the real life heroes like Jim [Warny] and bringing him to Shannon Airport to retell his story.”

 

The film’s Facebook page shows a photo of Thai veteran actor, Nirut Sirijanya, sitting on a chair with the cave in the background.

 

Nirut is believed to play then Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osottanakorn, who commanded the successful rescue operations.

 

Filming is to take place in Ireland and Thailand until the end of December and the film is expected to be released next year.

 

Waller was a producer of independent feature films, with Butterfly Man (2002), Ghost of Mae Nak (2005), The Elephant King (2006) amongst the titles produced through his production company De Warrenne Pictures.

 

 

In 2008, he produced Thomas Clay's Soi Cowboy (2008) which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival in Un Certain Regard.

In 2006, Waller was hired by Sony BMG Thailand to direct the El Nin-YO! music video for Thai-American pop princess Tata Young. Both the song and MV went straight to No.1 on Channel V and MTV charts.

 

After producing assignments in Thailand on foreign films Bitter/Sweet (2009), Creation (2009) and the The Prince & Me: The Elephant Adventure (2010), Waller decided to return to his passion for directing with Sop-mai-ngeap (2011), his Thai language cinematic directorial debut. The film was nominated for five Thailand National Film Association awards including Best Picture and Best Director.

 

In addition to directing again, he served as a producer on the English language debut of celebrated Thai director Prachya Pinkaew (Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior (2003)) with the Hollywood action thriller Elephant White (2011) starring two-time Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou and Golden Globe winner Kevin Bacon.

 

Most recently, he produced and directed Petchakat (2014), a biopic on Thailand's last prison executioner, which won the prestigious “Tukkata Tong” or Golden Doll awards for Best Picture and Best Screenplay, given by the Thai Entertainment Reporters Association. He also served as line producer for the action sequel Mechanic: Resurrection (2016), starring Jason Statham, Jessica Alba and Tommy Lee Jones, released by Summit Entertainment in 2016.

This will help bring back some tourists, its a healthy honest story with struggle, humour,drama and the Thai ''happy ending'' .rated family of course

Perhaps I am alone in this but having followed the drama live for 17 days, just 6 months ago, and experienced the real emotions of 'will they be found' and finally 'how will they get them out' I dont see how any film will enhance my experience. The live version had everything and all that will happen now is it will be condensed into under 2 hours and give a few overpaid actors a chance to pretend they are heroes. No thanks.

I was hoping George Lucas would direct.

Di Caprio as the coach? Steven Seagal  chief seal?

Wow... a half dozen months later... talk about fast..... in comparison, I think it took a half dozen years to do the tsunami movie

Am I a bad person to think this movie has all the signs of being stonkingly awful?

The tourists are already streaming into the Tham Luang Park - I have just returned from a visit.

Of course it will naturally be 100% True to every detail, no doubt showing the Thai's in a most favourable light. Maybe the director can get Prayuth to play the teacher that leads the children into the cave during the heavy flood season.

Anyone of course that doubts the authenticity of the narrative will be subject to a short stay at their local re education camp.

Give it a rest......

 

I bet the rescue of the Thai navy seal will be missing due to a mishap when the camera fell into the water.

It's all becoming farcical now.. how many more want to cash-in on the rescue !!!!

No, you are not alone, a lot of people are fed up with this stupid nonsense. Anyway, wasn't there another movie called 'the cave'? About a bunch of hot chicks potholing, they get lost, meet, and then get eaten by some gollum lookalike cave dwellers who can't stand the light. That's a much better storyline.

Well unless it follows a certain narrative it wont get past the censor , thats for sure. To be fair though Hollywood has churned out plenty of films that paid scant respect to the facts.

So they awarded the movie to someone who has only been in the thai movie are a and no relevant awards in the international arena. They should have thought of the kids future welfare and not ego and tourism. Shame

What are you talking about? Who is "they" and what has ego or tourism got to do with who's directing it?

wasn't aware the Chinese had much to do with it, although I believe there were a couple of Chinese divers on site, but 50 dying while trying to save 10 Thai kids -  wow - maybe everyone else was miss-lead to actually what was happening, even to the numbers Thai kids that were finally rescued.

That’s the reply thats referring to the Phoenix,I apologise !

If you are non seeing then no problem. Should have been a large Hollywood film not a two bit THAI stab at it that makes 50 baht. And if you need to ask who approved it then you are doing just fine with the blinders on.

Will not make any money abroad. It will not get picked up or even make Cannes film festival. 

l doubt they will finance the internatiinal distributiin themselves. No names movie. Purely Thai. Will have 0 impact on tourism.
