      Man Kills Ex-Lover in Mae Sai After Financial Dispute, Police in Pursuit

      In a shocking incident early morning on October 13, a man fatally attacked his ex-lover with a knife after she ended their relationship. The suspect, identified as Mr. Yee, 43, allegedly broke into the woman’s rental home in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai and violently assaulted her, leaving her with severe wounds. Despite being rushed to Mae Sai Hospital, the woman, known as Ms. Joy, in her 40s, succumbed to her injuries. The Mae Sai police were alerted to the crime around 05:00 and responded quickly to the scene in Ban Pa Yang Mai, Moo 4, Wiang Phang Kham subdistrict. Inside the bedroom, officers found bloodstains and signs of a violent struggle. Ms. Joy had suffered multiple deep cuts across her body, with some of her fingers nearly severed. According to Ms. Joy’s relative, Ms. Yui, the victim was a single mother of two, a son aged 18 and a daughter aged 14. She had separated from her children’s father years ago and had been in a relationship with Mr. Yee. However, she had recently distanced herself from him due to his excessive drinking, which led to the tragic incident after just two days of separation. Neighbours reported that Mr. Yee parked his car near the victim’s residence early in the morning and forced entry through the back door. He then proceeded to attack Ms. Joy while she was in bed. Her eldest son, who was in a nearby room, heard his mother’s screams and rushed to intervene, but Mr. Yee fled before he could be stopped. Mr. Yee’s sister, Ms. Srinuan revealed that Mr. Yee had been upset after Ms. Joy refused his request to reconcile and return the money he had given her during their relationship. Mr. Yee had been working in Bangkok and had financially supported Ms. Joy, including transferring an initial amount of 15,000 baht and a monthly allowance of 10,000 baht to help her raise her children. However, he had financial responsibilities of his own, including providing for his two children from a previous marriage. His 7-year-old son was preparing to be ordained as a monk, and Mr. Yee had requested his money back to cover the ordination expenses, but Ms. Joy declined. Ms. Srinuan shared that her brother had been drinking heavily and had expressed anger over the situation. He had frequently asked her how long he would be imprisoned if he killed someone. Early this morning, he left her house, and shortly afterward, the tragic murder occurred. Police are currently searching for Mr. Yee, who remains at large. Inbound remittances must be categorised for the Central Bank to understand the purpose of the funds transfer, all inbound remittances are seen by them for currency control purposes. Funds designated as living expenses are deemed to have been spent, hence later, they cannot be remitted back overseas. This has its roots in THB being a restricted currency and the ability of foreigner's to send money out of Thailand, a picture that has eased considerably in recent years but was once very strict. There is no tax aspect to remitted "living expenses" which are nothing more than inbound funds which may or may not be Thai tax assessable.

      An 18-year-old man in Rayong, climbed a 65 metre high-voltage power pole in a suicide attempt due to marital distress. Rescue workers had to contact his wife to convince him to come down safely. At approximately 14:00 on October 13, officers from the Nikom Phatthana Police Station and Siam Rayong Rescue Unit were dispatched to Soi 6 in the Nikom Phatthana Subdistrict after receiving reports of a young man threatening to take his life. Upon arrival, they found Mr. Sahaphat (last name withheld), sitting approximately 15 metres above the ground. Rescue workers attempted to persuade him to descend and talk, but their efforts were unsuccessful. He revealed that he had been arguing with his wife and had tried to take his life on two previous occasions, including a recent attempt to hang himself, which was thwarted by a friend. Prachai Daree, a rescue worker, decided to call Mr. Sahaphat’s wife and devised a plan to encourage him to come down for a conversation. After about 20 minutes of negotiation, Mr. Sahaphat agreed to climb down, wanting to speak to his wife. He requested her to wait for approximately two minutes while he descended. Investigations revealed that the couple had been experiencing long-standing issues, leading to their separation. Mr. Sahaphat had taken on the responsibility of raising their child and was hoping to reconcile, but his wife was unwilling. The day before this incident, he had attempted to end his life again but was saved by a friend. Authorities believe Mr. Sahaphat’s actions were a desperate plea for attention from his wife, who remained uninterested. Fortunately, police and rescue personnel successfully negotiated with him, ensuring his safe return to the ground. Following the incident, police provided him with counselling before releasing him.       This reference to "living expenses" is something I have never seen before in these discussions. That is in the current tax law? That's the only reason I bring any funds into Thailand every month, and almost 100% of it is food, utilities, auto fuel, home maintenance. No rent, no loans of any kind to pay off, etc. Debt free.

      Passenger Van Crashes into 18-Wheeler Truck, Passengers Injured

      In an early morning incident on October 13, a passenger van collided with the rear of an 18-wheeler truck on the Mittraphap-Khon Kaen road, heading out of Nakhon Ratchasima towards Khon Kaen. The incident occurred in front of a convenience store in Ban Bing, Non Sung District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Upon arrival at the scene, rescue teams from Hook 31 Nakhon Ratchasima, Non Sung Station, discovered the passenger van, registered in Ubon Ratchathani, with its front completely wrecked and wedged against the back of the truck, which is registered in Udon Thani. There were 10 people in the van and several passengers had already managed to exit the van with multiple visible injuries, prompting the rescue team to provide first aid. One passenger remained trapped in the front passenger seat. Rescue workers quickly deployed hydraulic cutters to remove the van door and successfully freed the individual, who was still conscious. The injured were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Preliminary reports from the rescue team indicated that none of the six injured passengers sustained life-threatening injuries. Authorities suspect that the van driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the crash into the truck, which was traveling normally on the road. A major drone attack on the Golani brigade in israel evaded israeli air defences and injured many and possibly 3 dead. https://www.newsweek.com/dozens-injured-hezbollah-attack-israel-1968310 The AP shared Israeli rescue services reports that said at least 40 people were injured after the Lebanese militant group said it had launched a "swarm of drones" at the Golani Brigade's camp in the northern Israeli town of Binyamina, about 30 miles south of Haifa. At least three people were "critically" injured, according to the AP, which shared footage of a helicopter arriving at Sheba Medical Center with the injured. The drones reportedly did not trigger Israel's alarm system.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake shook southern Alaska on Friday morning, buckling roads, disrupting traffic and knocking television stations off the air in the state's largest city, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

 

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake's epicentre was 8.1 miles (13 km) north of Anchorage, home to about 40 percent of the state's population. The temblor had a depth of 26.7 miles (43 km), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

 

A tsunami warning was issued for Cook Inlet, which links Anchorage with the Gulf of Alaska, but it was later cancelled.

 

The quake, of a magnitude that is common in Alaska, was followed by numerous aftershocks, and climatologist Rick Thoman reported that he felt it in Fairbanks, about 350 miles north of Anchorage, a city of about 300,000 residents.

 

"Thought the house was going to come apart," Anchorage-based climatologist Brian Brettschneider wrote on Twitter, posting a picture of his kitchen floor scattered with items that had fallen from cupboards.

 

Anchorage suffered major infrastructure damage, police said in a Twitter message, with homes and buildings damaged, and many roads and bridges are closed.

 

Rush-hour traffic in Anchorage came to a standstill and jammed up heading out of town after the quake struck at around 8:30 a.m. local time (1230 EST/1730 GMT).

 

Governor Bill Walker said he had issued a disaster declaration and was in direct contact with the White House, which said President Donald Trump was monitoring the situation.

 

The state has had an average of one magnitude 7 to 8 earthquake every year since 1900, according to the state government website, and the state has more earthquakes than any other U.S. region. Southern Alaska experienced the second largest earthquake ever recorded in 1964, which had a magnitude of 9.2.

 

Video posted on social media showed supermarkets with items from shelves strewn across the floors in the quake's aftermath, and of television station KTVA's newsroom in shambles.

 

A photo posted by a reporter at KTVA showed a deserted showroom, with part of its ceiling collapsed and debris scattered throughout the room. CNN reported that television station KTUU, an NBC affiliate, also was knocked off the air.

 

KTUU's website featured a photo of a snow-covered highway that had buckled, with a car sitting between two deep fissures crossing the highway.

 

The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport remained open, but arrivals and departure ramps were closed and there were reports of road damage, the airport said on Twitter.

 

The city's schools were evacuated and parents were notified to pick up their children.
