PHUKET: Phuket is facing its worst state in the fight against drugs with more drugs on the island than ever before and on average 23 people being arrested for drugs every day since the start of the year.

Somporn Sripanrod, the ministry of health official tasked with the Phuket Provincial Narcotics Control Management Center (Phuket-PNCME), described the scale of the problem simply: “Right now we are seizing more drugs than ever before.”

At a PNCME meeting in October, presided over by Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana and with Phuket Vice Governor Supoj Rotreuang Na Nongkhai present, it was revealed that more than 7,000 arrests had been made for drugs from Jan 1 through Sept 30 this year alone, giving an average of 23 people arrested each day.

The War On Drugs is still not working.

The 'war on drugs' is unwinnable.  Embrace Portugal's model!

Is Duterte consulting ?

Once governments admit the war on drugs is in fact primarily a war for the profits from drugs, they can actually make progress. In Thailand this is especially true, and that is why it is the last place where such an admission of the truth of the situation will ever be given.

War on drugs been lost before it even started.

No surprise given most officials will have their hand in the cookie jar.

Until the profit is taken out of this business it's going to end up getting a lot worse, there will never be enough police or prisons to curtail this.

272 days ..

so 7,000 : 272 = 25,7  and not 23

Hope the influx of Indian masses are ready for this...

Just a couple of days ago a friend was walking up Bangla road at around 6pm when he was approached by a Thai guy asking if he wanted to buy some cocaine or marijuana...........pretty open attempt to sell drugs!

Well the the U.S. tried prohibition in the 1920's and we all know how that worked out. The war on drugs will never be won. Why don't they follow Portugal's example and decriminalize drugs and quit feeding the drug mafia's

Yes but doesn't mean the war on drugs is wrong.what do you suggest give up or do you have a better idea?

Decriminalize all drugs, legalize and tax both Marijuana and Kratom. The war on drugs is not working. With decriminalization in Portugal, and legalization in Canada, and many US states there is information and a template on the steps to take and the logistical issues and consequences. Nothing to lose and everything to gain as far as I am concerned.

I did ask for a better idea.what may work in one small economically sound small country may not have the same effect as another.in America in 2015 there were 33,000 deaths from prescription opioids and heroin, fentanyl costing  the state 504 billion dollars.there has been a lot of change in what drugs are available since Portugal decriminalise drugs and is a whole different ball game today.by giving in you will have set the course for other countries to follow this rising epidemic.
