Video: Motorcyclist threatens the authorities with a box cutter during sidewalk riding arrest

Action between the authorities in Bangkok and motorcyclists using the sidewalk is now turning into all out war. 

 

A motorcycle taxi guy was seen on video threatening tessakit (municipal officers) and police with a box cutter.

 

He was upset about being told not to use the pavement and has been charged with seven offences.

 

This includes assault, slander, stopping officials from doing their job as well as illegal use of a vehicle and being on the sidewalk on a bike. 

 

He will appear in court today after admitting everything that happened in Lat Prao Soi 79. 

 

He was not a local to the rank concerned being in fact based some kilometers away in Ramkhamhaeng.

 

Meanwhile the deputy in charge of traffic in the area Lt-Col Sorapong Nakhayokhee of the Choke Chai police said that a meeting would be held this week between the force and motorcycle taxi riders in the area.

 

The riders will be told to stay off the sidewalk - or else.

Good luck with that. They have been using them for so long, they have forgotten it is supposed to be for pedestrians. Hence the show of force when this idiot got pulled up for it. They think they own the roads and the sidewalks.

Apparently when you leave things to fester for so long allowing all sorts of groups to establish foothold on pavements and street corners erect stands, shades and seating facilities no wonder that those mafia style guys things that they own the pavements and behave accordingly...

Indeed and this is the key point.

 

Most posters are viewing the motorcycle taxi driver as simply an aggressive individual but he is in fact part of a group under the protection of an influential person, typically a senior police officer, powerful local politician or military officer. This group is a valuable income stream for the patron and the patron will protect members of the group.

Sure he should be prosecuted and severely fined.

 

But I can understand that he hates the annoying tessakit. Because they are even worse than police in terms of doing nothing except collecting bribes.

They often collet 2000B for a little cigarette ash. But at the same time they ignore heaps of rubbish from the locals...

At 3-5 days pay why not? Just because we walk around with plenty more than this in our pockets doesn't mean this guy isn't taking a big hit. It's all relative.

The article stated 7 offence of which FIVE were listed. How do you know whether or not if one of the others was carrying a weapon, even IF a box cutter is classed as a weapon. If it is I'd better empty the Armoury in my kitchen drawer.

I dont , but I said NO MENTION of which there is none in the article. 

 

As for the weapon, the general classification defines a weapon as “any object, device or instrument designed as a weapon or through its use is capable of threatening or producing bodily harm,” including “all knives, blades.” .

I think the point at which it is considered a weapon, is when you wave it in someones face aggressively. Unless you do this in your own house, I suspect your kitchen armoury can carry on carving the Sunday roast, without fear of arrest.

Police and other relevant officials should have been enforcing the law 30 years ago so that these circumstances / events don't occur.

 

Same with helmets, and many more, the police through their lack of action are just as culpable as the folks who commit the offences.

 

Drivers going through red lights is another example, for decades the police who are at intersections just watch it happen and do nothing, so more and more drivers do it because they know the police will take no action. Roll on more cameras and roll on better ways to force offenders to pay fines. 

 

Parking on the wrong side of the road is also illegal and it's getting more and more prevalent everywhere in Thailand. Five years from now suddenly there will be another 'crackdown' and enforcement of the law will be more difficult because of total lack of action now and in the past.

 

As above the police through their lack of action are just as culpable as the offenders.

The fuzz will back away from the perpetrator gingerly, or look the other way completely - after a bit of backsheesh has been handed over. 

 

Same old story, it's a non-story in fact. Just another under-educated, under-endowed manchild with an inflated ego. Should have got the kosh to the head in the first instance. Threatening a police officer would entitle that surely?

Instead he says sorry on TV and wais...pfff, pathetic.

 

Severely fine the little twonk, take away his license, ban him from driving a mb taxi (or any other public transport) for life and consider giving him a short, sharp shock - i.e.: custodial sentence. Totally deserving of all the above IMO.

 

These numbskulls couldn't hold down down a mop-job, more often that not, and it seems like half of them can't drive, couldn't care less about their customer's safety or comfort and are more often than not the scum of Thai society. I have had a fair few <deleted> tard motorbike drivers in the past, and have nearly come to blows with a few just like this clown. Always best to walk away whenever possible of course... and buy your own transport - which is just what I've done. Never been happier. Until the police get serious and the justice system follows suit, these plebs will continue to run amok. 

Green shirts (Tessakit) need to stick to their duties busting people for cigarettes. 

I imagine there are some decent mototaxi drivers out there. I've just never run into them. If there is a dust up between farang and Thai, who are the first to rush to get some boot kicking in? The rudest, lowest status with smoldering hatred for farangs going full on violent at least provocation?

A Bangkok motorcycle-taxi driver was due in court on Monday after reportedly confessing to pulling a knife on a municipal law-enforcement officer who stopped him riding on a pedestrian footpath. Thousands of people have already seen the video evidence on social media – a November 30 confrontation at the mouth of Soi Lad Phrao 79.

 

The motorcyclist, Sakan Mankhong, was recorded rudely scolding and flashing a box cutter at a Thesakij official after getting a warning about riding on the sidewalk.

 

He claimed he thought the official was menacing him with a weapon so he acted in self-defence.

 

Sakan was to appear in Northern Bangkok District Court charged with assault, obstructing and insulting an on-duty official, carrying a weapon in public, riding on a footpath, abuse of a vehicle and driving without a licence.

 

Later in the morning, the public prosecutors asked to take sometime to review the charges for indictment as some such as insulting police and weapon carrying were criminal offences, hence the prosecutors had police to apply for the suspect's first detention period at a criminal court instead.

 

Police in the Chokchai area are warning motorcycle taxis and their bosses that they’re being earnest in cracking down on bikes using sidewalks. The fine can be as much as Bt1,000.

I get your humorous point about general action against pavement riding but, in respect of this specific incident,  if someone, who was clearly losing it, came at me like that with a box cutter I would feel very threatened as I suspect this officer did.  Then, of course, I have never been in a street fight or bar brawl so what do I know?

When the army just took control i noticed there were not that many traffic offenders for 2 weeks but after that it all went back to normal.

 

I seriously thought mr Prayuth would jump on it but he found the lottery tickets more important, those are also back to normal (raised) prices now.

 

It's time for a real leader who has grip on this country.
