The Immigration Bureau website has announced the arrest of 27 Palestinians.

 

Some 22 were rounded up in Lat Prao Soi 144 after raids by immigration and crime suppression police. These comprised 6 men, nine women the rest being small children. 

 

Five more adults described as "mafia figures" were arrested in Soi Nana. 

 

The Palestinians are claiming refugee status but are now in detention in Suan Phlu.

 Where is the UN and UNHCR in all of that? so living in BKK and rounded as mafia is better for them?... coming to countries like Thailand is not a solution....

That seems like pure speculation and I see nothing in the story to substantiate any of it.

From what little the story does say, the biggest issue seems to have been publicly protesting in front of an embassy. Not something people breaking laws are wont to do. While some of them may have been making themselves busy in Nana, it seems most have been arrested purely for being refugees, standing up for their international rights, and who would have almost certainly entered legally. If you are illegal, publicly protesting would not be wise. 

And from now on, ALL Palestinians will apparently be detained. No one else see anything wrong with that? Innocent and guilty treated alike?

Not sure but Thailand my not have signed up to Geneva convention or similar.

I think a week or two in the detention centre will make them think twice about claiming to be refugees.if your going to be a bad boy making money by being mafia in Thailand at least pay under the table and have a visa.

No matter what the adults may or may not have done - and the most likely scenario is that they fled an untenable life in the Middle East, arrived in Thailand, had to make money somehow and are now described by Thai police as 'mafia' - it's sad to see innocent foreign children at the mercy of an authoritarian government whose track record with displaced persons in recent times is less than exemplary, to put it mildly. 

For these people, it is no laughing matter, but from a few of the comments here it is clear that some Westerners, living their comfortable lives in Thailand while cracking weak jokes at others' misfortunes, do not have the wit nor the imagination to feel any compassion for these unfortunates.

Asylum seekers and refugees in oz also get locked up behind razor wire on a remote . Why should thailand be any different. If they are smart they will continue the crackdowns and stay in control of their country.. Something many 1st world have failed at and look at the results!

Just because you don't like your own country it does not mean we have to give you everything 

I am against helping people in my own country better to help them in the first safe country near where they come from 

To meny only come for money in Europe and always complaining and make crimes and that is a fact

Are they just now claiming refugee status after being arrested?  Wouldn't one normally claim refugee status when entering a country?  Sounds dodgy to me.  When and how did they get into Thailand?  How long they been in Thailand?

Sounds from the report that they were staying in the country illegally and once caught they have then claimed refugee status.

The Police had reason to believe some were involved in illegal activities in the nana area and investigations led them to the lad prao area were their counterparts were staying illegally.

So yes, the Thai Police would rightly lock them up.

What's the problem. If you are concerned about the children then don't be. Their parents put them there and the children are their responsibility, not yours.

Thailand has made it quite clear it will not tolerate penniless foreigners staying and working illegally in the country wherever they come from. Their choice

You are aware that in the original article the men were referred to as mafia figures, detained in sow Nana.     

 

So it would seem somewhat unlikely they are simply refugees fleeing oppression if they are largeing it up in Nana.

Why are you confused?  Of course i don't like or agree with kids being locked up, but, its very clear in its description of the adults.  Do you think immigration refers to any old Tom Dick and Harry as mafia?  And lets make it clear, mafia is often used here as a collective term for undesirables.  I'm sure there's more to this than meets the eye.  

 

Perhaps if they were working ninth better interests or their wives and kids they might have spent less time trawling around red light areas and more time conserving their finances and meeting immigration officials to lobby their case?

Correct, you claim asylum when you first flee your country to enter another, not enter a country, overstay your visa and commit crimes then plead asylum to try to stay !!

It may surprise some readers to learn that Thailand is the ONLY country which allows Palestinians free entry. Of course, officials know these folks are genuine refugees & stateless persons.

 

Most who come here are ultimately resettled in Western countries by the UN Refugee Agency. But usually not before their Thai permit to stay expires which leaves them in legal limbo, subject to arbitrary detention & deportation.

 

Mafia? Crimes? Sez hoo, exactly?!? May be a Big Joke!

 

For narrow-minded posters like quoted above, I think you need to start wearing the shoes of others less fortunate than you.
