Did you even watch the linked program? Russia is still selling gas to Europe but it costs them more. Germany going into recession and companies closing is the "price". I guess it doesn't affect YOU then, to be so blase. The US, which is the driver of this proxy war is doing great out of it, selling lots of weapons and munitions, and now getting to sell gas to Europe. Ukrainians not doing well at all, and now Europeans suffering high prices for gas. Of course the leaders are not suffering at all, until the next elections. -

Pickup Truck Collides with Elephant, Injuring Three as Animal Retreats into Sugarcane Fields

A collision between a pickup truck and a large elephant on January 3, left three people injured in Kabin Buri District, Prachinburi Province, Thailand, with the animal retreating into nearby sugarcane fields. Emergency responders from the Sajja Buddhadham Kabin Buri rescue unit were alerted to the incident on Road 359, near Ban Nong Talat in Tambon Lat Takhian. Upon arrival, they discovered a pickup truck with damage to the front left side and a shattered windshield. Three occupants of the vehicle sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. A investigation of the scene revealed large elephant footprints, measuring 57 cm in circumference, leading away from the roadside into sugarcane fields spanning over 2,000 rai. Mr. Patipan, a 21-year-old passenger, explained that he, his mother, partner, and a child were travelling from Khao Hin Son to Sa Kaeo when the accident occurred. “After passing a red light and attempting to overtake a truck, a large elephant suddenly appeared crossing the road. I couldn’t brake in time and hit its rear. I regularly use this route but have never seen such a large elephant before. Fortunately, my family wasn’t seriously hurt, but we’ve gone to the hospital for check-ups.” Local official Mr. Paivan Thakham, 48, a member of the Lat Takhian subdistrict administration, said that the area frequently sees elephants crossing the road in search of food. “There are around five or six elephants in this area, and from the driver’s description, we believe this may have been ‘Sida Honok,’ a particularly tall and robust elephant. Elephants often cross here, and we’ve set up a local team to monitor and deter them daily.” Drone footage and ground patrols have been employed to trace the elephants’ movements. The group is believed to have crossed from Thung Praya before retreating into the sugarcane plantation. The sugarcane fields, a regular foraging site for the elephants, provide ample shelter and sustenance. Mr. Ekkachai Saendee, Director of the Department of Conservation and Prevention, has been informed of the incident and is expected to visit the site with his team later today to assess the situation. Authorities are urging motorists using Road 359 to exercise caution, particularly at night, as elephant crossings in this area are a known hazard. At stake are maritime security needs and international partnerships, notably with China and Germany. The Royal Thai Navy is prioritising the acquisition of four high-performance frigates, each priced at approximately 17.50 billion baht. These vessels are deemed essential for Thailand to maintain a strong naval presence in both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. The current fleet includes four frigates: HTMS Bhumibol, HTMS Taksin, HTMS Naresuan, and HTMS Rattanakosin. However, the Navy asserts that eight are essential by 2037 to meet strategic defence goals. Yet, the procurement project faced a setback as it was rejected by a special committee dominated by Pheu Thai MPs. They raised concerns about the defence budget potentially detracting from the government’s economic stimulation policies. Similarly contentious is the issue of submarine procurement. The ongoing saga involves three submarines initially estimated to cost 13.5 billion baht each. Central to this delay is the question of sourcing engines, spurring discussions with Chinese and German ambassadors. Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai aims to finalise procurement within six months, considering whether Germany might directly supply the engines, even if it involves complex technical installations. The potential inauguration of Donald Trump as US President adds another layer of uncertainty. His administration may influence Thailand's military procurement strategies and international dealings, particularly concerning military technology cooperation. Phumtham also noted Thailand has been observing Pakistan’s evaluation of Chinese-manufactured submarines, though obtaining detailed findings remains elusive due to security confidentiality. In the light of these challenges, a pause in the procurement of these submarines or a complete cancellation could be considered. However, this decision carries the risk of straining Thailand's diplomatic relations with China, which might also affect broader initiatives like the high-speed rail project connecting the two nations. Furthermore, any shift in these defence plans might impact relations with Cambodia, particularly concerning overlapping claims over areas like Koh Kut Island. The memorandum of understanding known as MOU44 stands as a backdrop where any reassessment could have significant repercussions. As these considerations unfold, the Thai government and Navy must walk a fine line—balancing defence capabilities and economic policies while managing international relationships delicately. The victim, identified as Mr. Saichon 51, reportedly slipped while urinating near a riverside pontoon in Chachoengsao Province and drowned.
