Three women were killed when a black BMW iX3 collided with a tuk-tuk in a housing estate in Bang Bua Thong, Nonthaburi, early on 20 July. Police said the 32-year-old BMW driver, identified only as Yotsathorn, recorded an alcohol level of 152 milligrams per cent following the crash, well over the legal limits. He was due to be taken to the police station for legal proceedings. The collision was reported to Bang Bua Thong Police Station at 4.30am at the entrance to Soi 12 in a housing estate in Sano Loi subdistrict. Ruamkatanyu Foundation volunteers and forensic medical staff attended the scene. Tuk-tuk overturned after high-speed collision CCTV footage timestamped 4.08am showed the tuk-tuk leaving Soi 12 with two passengers and turning right towards the front of the estate. A black BMW travelling at speed then struck it, before losing control and hitting a roadside tree, police said. The tuk-tuk overturned and was badly damaged. The BMW came to rest about 20 metres away with extensive front-end damage and deployed airbags. The dead were named as tuk-tuk driver Pathumphon Prasertkantrong, 37, and passengers Phat Sae-ngow, 77, and Lamai Atchakornlak, 82. Yotsathorn was found at the scene in an intoxicated condition. He told police he had just returned from watching the World Cup at a restaurant in the Ratchaphruek area and would accept responsibility for his actions. He said the vehicle was insured. Family says the women were heading to market Namphloy Ploynumngeun, 38, niece of the two elderly passengers, said her aunts had been travelling to sell snacks at Bang Bua Thong market when the BMW, which she said was swerving, hit the tuk-tuk with force. She said she heard what sounded like a crash from inside her home and went outside to find the wrecked tuk-tuk. She did not know the BMW driver, although he said he lived in the estate. Namphloy said the family would pursue the case to the fullest extent of the law. Rungsak Prasertkantrong, 49, husband of the tuk-tuk driver, said his wife had regularly collected the two women and taken them to Bang Bua Thong market for many years. He learned of the crash from a motorcycle taxi rider. He said the couple had been together for more than 20 years and that he must now support their two children.
