Has Big Joke been promoted? New rank suggests he's on the up and up

 

 

Thai media has referred to chief of immigration Surachate Hakparn - the darling of the press and public known affectionately as Big Joke - with a new rank. 

 

Channel 7 news in a story about the introduction of iris recognition technology today referred to Surachate as Lieutenant General. 

 

This would be a step up from his old rank of Major General by which he was referred to in his days as deputy at the tourist police and in the first few months since his promotion to head of the Immigration Bureau.

while a major is senior to a lieutenant, a lieutenant general is senior to a major general 'cos major general is short for sergeant major general or so i was taught.

Because originally the rank was Sergeant Major General which is clearly lower than Lieutenant, but over time the Sergeant part was dropped and became Major General.

Thai Wiki updated yesterday.

Rank translates as "Police Lieutenant General".

The news of the promotion must have been under the radar.

An article in PPTV news of yesterday shows him in the 3-star immigration police uniform and still using the old title

There are misc photos from yesterday showing him in immigration uniform.

Stand corrected on this speculation.

The official promotion was obviously on November 22, 2018.

Seen in a video of "Dailynews" from November 23.

Also on his FB timeline there are multiple photos in 3-star uniform from November.

Lieutenant General is higher, one step down from full General.
