I was just shopping in Big C and noticed a sign on the Casino cold cuts cabinet saying that there would be temporary shortages of their products due to new rules on the importation of cooked meats.

I knew they were getting leery about people importing raw meat, even if it’s purely for their own use in cooking, but what is this new regulation on importing cooked meats and how will it affect expats bringing some cold cuts back to Thailand from, say, Europe? This sort of product is so cheap in the UK and Europe compared with Thailand that I always bring back a few kilos whenever I visit the family back home.

Here at Big C in Khon Kaen and Udon Thani no stuff since two months or so.

Very frustrating.

They're not exactly over-stocked with imported stuff, but I got a few packs of the Casino mousse de foie and some Paris Ham. I hadn't really noticed any shortages as they're never that well stocked with the Casino meats. This was the Big C branch on Sukhumvit in South Pattaya. We've also got Big C Extra in Central Pattaya that usually has more stock, but I haven't been there in a while as the one on Suk is much easier to get to for me.

I always visit this place when in Pattaya.

A different world compared to here.

After the sale of Big C to the Thai company there was a downturn already but now it is really miserable.

What supports the idea about the meat import is the fact that there is no shortage of cheese/brie/camembert. Almost the only reason to even walk in.

The Big C in Central Patt is nice indeed....
