US man so pleased to get back cash left in taxi that he’s moving here

An American former police officer visiting Bangkok has made up his mind to retire in Thailand after a taxi driver returned US$9,800 (Bt310,000) he’d inadvertently left in the cab.

Weerapon Kamsiri, 57, found a bag containing the cash on Tuesday while cleaning his car and called police, who’s already heard from Jerry Allen Hart.

Hart, 74, had notified them about the lost money after riding in Weerapon’s cab to Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Police determined that the amount Weerapon found matched the amount reported lost and arranged for the two men to meet at the airport police station on Tuesday night.

Hart was quick to offer Weerapon a cash reward.

“I actually had two more passengers before I started cleaning the cab and found the bag,” Weerapon said, so he wasn’t sure who’d left it behind.

“I was so worried when I found it – worried for its owner,” he said.

“I’d been toying with the idea of spending my retirement in Thailand,” Hart said, “but because of this incident I’ve made up my mind to move here.”

Great story.

I wonder what percent of people that if they found the bag, would hide it from the driver and keep the money?

Act in haste .. Repent at leisure ..

With the extra fees in the new Thai Bank scam on withdrawls, many an expat/retiree will be dungling around,  big amounts of ca$h....better start to shop around for some heavy duty safes and bring in somebody from abroad if you can afford it, to mount it in a well hidden area at home !!!

I usually roll off the plane with 200K plus, saves on bank fees.

Maybe he could better have left, ...after leaving a 20, or small 10, % reward for the taxi driver? Afraid we've just got another stingy long-termer...

can someone refer me to the "Taxi driver rips off(insults, refuses fare, plays with himself etc) story's as I appear to have missed the one that usually appears just before this type of "news" item.

I lost my wallet once in China and it was returned to me at my hotel but I never thought of that as a basis to move to China

And especially being a cop, you'd think he'd know better...

Maybe he was one of those "if I'm supposed to stay here, give me a sign" prayer types, and saw this as his "sign"?

If you don't believe that then you probably won't believe this.

About 2006 I was riding the sleeper train to Nong Khai from Bangkok. In the same car were three drunken Swedes who apparently got off in Khon Kaen while I was sleeping. When I woke up in the moring I noticed a fanny pack that got left in the lower bunk where one of the Swedes was to have slept. Not seeing them anymore I secured it and searched it for information that might lead me to getting it back to its owner. Inside was 10,600 Euros, in cash, a passport and a 123 Go pamphlet that you get when you buy a Sim card. FORTUNATELY the guy had scribbled the mobile number associated with the Sim card on the pamphlet.  I called the number and he was currently at the Khon Kaen police headquarters reporting his loss.

Anyway, I told him I was enroute to Nong Khai and that he should pay a police officer to drive to my location to pick it up. He couldn't understand why he ought to be paying anybody so I asked to speak to the cop.  The cop said he would drive to the Nong Khai terminal immediately and I should expect him in 3 hours.  We did arrive and I paid him 200 Euro of the guy's money for making the trip and called the guy to tell him I had done so. He was pissed off for some reason.  The whole thing cost me a day as I wasn't able to get to Thai Embassy in Vientiane when I needed to.

Good thing he did not leave money in a taxi in Afghanistan and it was returned to him.

I can understand if you were in Laos with 300,000 kip because their money is worthless but walking around with 300,000 baht you would have to scratch your head on this one. He better lap it up things soon change when you retire here. The guy in the brown uniform might not be his best friend then lol

Another media circus at the police station, why don't they just give the old man back his money so he can give that taxi driver his reward and get the hell out of there?

Does this happen in other countries ?

The whole police force is a circus headed by the BIG JOKE Nobody and I mean the local population takes them serious

Never takes them long (knockers) to be "out of the traps"...(as in greyhound racing for the un-iniciated).

Guy has a lot to learn ! Carrying 10$k US and thinking everyone is so nice because the senile old man found an honest taxi driver ! Get ready for shocks if you decide to hang out in the country permanently!
