While you are waiting, assuming you haven't already submitted a tax return 2017/2018 do it now and submit it. if you don't submit a tax return and contest the amount it becomes the tax you have to pay, so don't delay, FWIW you are getting close to having to pay a penalty for late submission. The final submission date for 2017-18 Tax returns is 31 January 2019.... or 31 December 2018, if you want any tax owed (up to c £3,000, I think) included in your 2019-20 tax code. Link to comment

I provided full information although I might not have understood the questions fully. My circumstances are. Living in Thailand 12 years Living on funds accrued in Nationwide bank. I transfer every 2 years to Thailand. Interest declared from Nationwide I believe best to be honest then nothing can, hopefully, go wrong. But now I have stress to deal with HMRC from afar. Already sent letter via Post Office. Thankfully I have 7 weeks to sort it out, Jan 31 being the deadline. Sent from my SM-G610F using Tapatalk Try not to stress, DO ALL YOU CAN then just wait for answers. Find things to lessen the chances of worrying too much - The worry CANNOT help you. These things (That are inherently wrong - as in your case) almost always get sorted. Good luck 1 Link to comment
Popular Post Moonlover
As many have already said, HMRC never send such information by e-mail. This is most definitely a scam. If you haven't deleted the e-mail forward it on to HMRC at this address. [email protected] They will acknowledge receipt and confirm that is indeed a scam. DO NOT click on any links that maybe on the email. Edited December 7, 2018 by Moonlover 3 Link to comment

With the OP being on a state pension, the DWP website says they cannot touch your'e state pension. I know it's not the DWP the OP is dealing with, I may be wrong, but does this not apply to anyone? Is it not UK law that people must always be left with enough money to live on, and no one can touch your'e state pension? Link to comment
alkazared
Be very careful do not send money it is surely a scam, I don't think HMRC will contact you by email, it is a known scam in UK. Have you ever given HMRC your email address? 1 Link to comment

BangkokTony
You need to be absolutely sure you are not dealing with a scam email first. You need to contact the HMRC directly. Do not click or any links in the email. Do not cut and paste or follow any URL details in the email. I wouldn't stress too much about an estimated assessment from HMRC. They are easily remedied.Thank you. I have 7 weeks to resolve then the interest will start to be added if I cannot reconcile.Sent from my SM-G610F using Tapatalk Link to comment
BangkokTony
HMRC send messages through your online personal tax account NOT by email If you have gone paperless. If you are over the tax allowance currently 11500 on UK earned income/pensions you are liable to UK tax regardless of how many years you have lived abroad. My only income is 8500 approx from UK pension plus 1000 a year interest on savings.I sent by paper 2 months ago. I am sure they are wrong but it does cause me distress. I know I'll be held in a queue on the phone. I'll use 0500 ais. It'll be worth every bant to resolve Sent from my SM-G610F using Tapatalk Link to comment

grumpy 4680
Iv'e got 8 e-mails in my con folder from inland revenue, all stating a tax refund, and to contact UK gateway etc. but I will not click on the link, in case thats what the con-men want, In the end all my tax returns have been recieved in the post (uk address). However tax due is another issue, and I don't think they would send an e-mail, if you can see no reason for such a demand then I would ignore it, and maybe sort it next time inthe UK 2 Link to comment
BangkokTony
They may not even look at the letter until after the deadline.......remember Xmas is in the middle as well.I feel I am not competant enough to use commercial software as I do not understand the terminology. I had no problem for my first 9 years here. However lately the question have changed and I am confused. I will appoint an accountant in future. BangkokTony
The phishing scam emails often have a link to a bogus site, designed to look like the real thing. I regularly get these things and almost fell for it once. As has been said, the inland revenue never send emails regarding rebates or demands.I agree. I didnt follow any links. I used password, which no one would know.If they are wrong is it possible to sue for causing stress etc?Sent from my SM-G610F using Tapatalk Link to comment

HHTel
I've not filled in a tax return for the best part of 20 years since I've been living in Thailand. Of course, tax is still due on any income originating in the UK. I take an annual drawdown from one pension company who deduct tax at source. Unfortunately, they always use emergency coding resulting in a few thousand overpayment. I reclaim the overpayment online within a week of being charged. HMRC refund the overpayment very quickly and that's it for another year. I have never had emails from HMRC and would agree with others that this is some sort of scam. The solution of course is ASK THEM! 1 Link to comment

The HMRC now operate on a real time basis, meaning they have up to date information of any earnings accrued under PAYE , thus your pension income will already be recorded has it is paid. I suspect that the HMRC believe that you have another source of income subject to tax.. Thus could be due to completing the self assessment incorrectly. 1 1 Link to comment
