Bangkok cabbie has license suspended for dumping Korean passengers

A taxi driver has been fined a total of 2,000 baht and had his license suspended for one month for dumping two Korean passengers.

Officials from the Land Transport Department took action against taxi driver Surachart Artwongsa, 43, after he had a disagreement with two passengers who he said were speaking a language he did not understand.

The passengers were later discovered to be Korean, one of whom was a famous TV personality who posted a video of his ordeal on social media.

According to Korean TV presenter Kim Woo Ri, the driver had driven him and a work colleague round in circles for more than 20 minutes. When he complained, the driver threatened him with a stick.

Mr Surachart told officials that due to the language barrier between him and his passengers he thought they wanted to go Sampeng market, when actually they wanted to go to Sathorn Road.

Mr Surachart added that he didn’t want to take them to Sathorn Road so without asking for a fare, he told the passengers to leave his cab.

He said he became angry at the passengers because they left the doors of his cab open when they left.

He also said he didn’t threaten them with a stick as was originally claimed, but instead used the cardboard centre of a toilet roll.

Mr Surachart apologised for damaging the image of Thailand and that of other  Bangkok taxi drivers.

Can someone explain what this self perceived "image" of Thailand really is?

Perfection, centre of the universe, best in ta hone why wornd.

What ae these comments god for? Your ego?

Doubtful......because despite his licence suspension, most probable the chap will continue driving his car and continue trying to cheat passengers on refusing the meter....these official taxi crooks of Bangkok are a plague to society and destroy the first image one can get of Thailand at the airport when they argue on turning ON the meter....

That's a very large cardboard toilet roll in that photo... supersized by the looks of it...  ????

Last week we took a taxi from mochit, the driver had long black curly hair but on the license was a pic of a man with millimetered hair and he looked totally different..the driver was good though and used the metre.

Well, I'm sure he knows the way to Khao San Rd. the hub of licenses...

Good lord-a Korean TV personality.

These fools never learn.

The fines are a joke, they should fine the cabbies at least 10,000 baht. I'm sure if the cabbies wanted to they still can drive with a suspended license. Which many do anyways.

Obviously .... a center piece of cardboard from a toilet paper roll?

Their image of Thailand is a tropical paradise full of wise and friendly people. Our image of Thailand is entirely different.

No charge for carrying an offensive weapon or for threatening behaviour then, even though caught in action. That speaks volumes for the mentality here.

Stopped using theiving taxis and tuk tuks long ago. Did these tourists from a tech savvy country not have a smart phone and grab app???
