Premchai ‘excited’ as he appears in court to face black-leopard poaching charges

Premchai arrives at a Kanchanaburi Court on Wednesday.//Chalinee Thirasupa

Construction tycoon Premchai Karnasuta said he was excited when he appeared at court in Kanchanaburi’s Thong Pa Phum district on Wednesday to defend himself on poaching-related charges.

This is the first time that Premchai has appeared in court after he was arrested in February at the Thung Yai Naresuan wildlife sanctuary.

He declined to talk to waiting reporters, saying only “I’m excited”, when asked how he was feeling. The other defendants, his four close aides, arrived at court separately.

The authorities confiscated the remains of a black leopard and two other protected animals as well as rifles and other weapons from his camp at the wildlife sanctuary in February.

Four of his aides, including a female cook, were also apprehended at the campsite and charged.

The arrests hit both local and foreign headlines as Premchai runs an Italian-Thai construction company that has won many government contracts.

Many fear he will be able to evade prosecution due to his connection with influential figures in Thailand.

However, the investigation has expanded to his home in Bangkok, and he and his wife have also been charged for the illegal possession of elephant tusks.

So he's still eating the panther parts then?

Still excited? How big was that bowl of soup he had in February?

Perish the thought .. Surely that sort of behaviour is reserved for Banana republics not the purer than driven snow Kingdom of TL ..

Life at the top of the food chain...

Hope he gets just as excited when exhibit (turd) is presented to the court also retrieved form the forest will be like an old friends reunion and probably his only support????

A lot of eyes on this one, consciousness vs elitism. For the sake of future generations a example should be set but in most cases money talks, nature walks.

Looks like he enjoyed eating the leopard.

I see he's still using his theatrical prop - that walking stick, hoping he will gain sympathy from the judge.

Pity it's not Hanging Judge Jeffreys on the case.

He’s excited because he knows that whatever the verdict is, nothing will happen to him and it will all fade away after the media circus is over.

Unless of course he’s not playing ball with the right people, but you don’t get to be a tycoon here by playing ball with the wrong people.

In his case, maybe money lies, nature dies?

Well, judging by his appearance, there's adequate food at the top of the chain.????

Not sure that he really means "excited" in the literal sense. In my experience, most Thai people with limited English say "I am excited" when they really mean "I am nervous".

A pity it was not the Queen of Hearts as the judge.

I think in this case and in most others involving hi-so's, nature gets shot & stuffed, but does not walk. ????

We'll see whether his money and connections buys him freedom from his crimes, but the fact that it has gone this far, suggests that at some time he has stepped on a bigger puu yai's toes. And judging from the size of him, it no doubt hurt! ????

Italian-Thai?? I have never met an Italian in Thailand, have you?

Premchai shows up to testify over black-leopard poaching charges

CONSTRUCTION TYCOON Premchai Karnasuta said he was “excited” to be appearing in court in Kanchanaburi’s Thong Pa Phum district yesterday to defend himself on poaching-related charges.

It was his first court appearance since being arrested in February at the Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary.

He declined to talk to waiting reporters, saying only, “I’m excited”, when asked how he was feeling. He was using a walking stick.

The other defendants in the case, his four close aides, arrived at court separately.

Authorities confiscated the remains of a black leopard and two other protected species as well as rifles and other weapons from his camp at the sanctuary in February.

Four of his aides, including a woman cook, were also apprehended at the campsite and charged.

The arrests garnered both headlines overseas because Premchai runs an Italian-Thai construction firm that has won several government contracts.

Observers have expressed concern that he will be able to evade prosecution due to his connections with influential figures in Thailand.

However, the investigation soon expanded to his home in Bangkok and he and his wife were also charged with illegal possession of elephant tusks.

Yesterday was the first day for defendants to testify, beginning with Premchai, who gave his side from 9.30am until noon. After lunch, his aide and driver Yong Dotekrua testified. Yong is said to be a regular companion of Premchai on adventure excursions.

The afternoon session ended at 4.30pm and again the defendants refused to speak to reporters as they left court.

Their lawyers had initially told the court they would call 17 witnesses, but reduced the number to eight yesterday.

The hearing continues today with four other witnesses, including Natee Riemsaen and Thanee Thummart, who were arrested the same day as Premchai.

It is not known if Premchai will return to court now that his testimony has been recorded.

Just love his attire what every Thai tycoon should be wearing to court, loosened tie, pants that don't fit and held up by a belt that appears to have missed a couple of loops. And this is a man that represents a company that has jumped into bed with the Chinese to build H.S. railway in Thailand, if he can't do up his tie how can we expect him to build a railway.

Give the man a break, he's a constructionworker not a gay weddingplanner.

His attire is  all part of the plan.

Walking stick dishevelled appearance, make him look like an old down and out, not fully aware of whats going on.

Me your honour, no way, i was misled by my cook, she said she needed wild herbs for cooking.????

It's a mistranslation of the Thai word ตื่นเต้น dteun dten which sometimes translates as excited but often means nervous, as in about to go on stage.

You'd think he could afford "tailored" trousers with his wealth, obviously he has difficulty finding off-the-peg ones that fit properly, unless it's down to weight loss due to stress of the court case!!

,,,,,,,He was using a walking stick. .........

Er, in the photograph he is loosely carrying a cane....

If he were a construction "worker" he would be many kg lighter, a darker shade of pale and a damn sight fitter than he look.

He is a high up office manager with the same arrogant ways as many other Thais.
