Anger in UK parliament as Corbyn accused of calling PM 'stupid woman'

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's House of Commons erupted in anger on Wednesday when Labour opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn appeared to mouth the words "stupid woman" after a lively exchange with Prime Minister Theresa May.

Corbyn's remark was captured by television cameras during the question-and-answer session in parliament that British leaders have to endure every Wednesday.

He had been peppering May with hostile questions about her decision last week to postpone a parliamentary vote on a long-awaited divorce deal with the European Union.

In reply, May had suggested Corbyn might not enjoy the support of his own lawmakers over the EU and, taking a well-worn line from Christmas pantomimes, said: "I've got some advice for the Right Honourable Gentleman - look behind you!

"They are not impressed and neither is the country!"

Corbyn then shook his head and appeared to mutter "stupid woman" under his breath.

A spokesman for Corbyn later said: "He did not call her a stupid woman, so I don’t think there are any grounds for an apology. As I understand it, he said 'stupid people'"

A session that had begun with lawmakers wishing each other a Merry Christmas and peaceful New Year soon descended into an unholy row as female lawmakers in particular demanded that Corbyn be censured.

As lawmakers shouted at each other across the debating chamber, Commons Speaker John Bercow said he had not seen or heard the alleged incident and could not rule on it.

May told lawmakers: "I think that everybody in this house, particularly in this 100th anniversary of women getting the vote, should be aiming to encourage women to come into this Chamber ... and should therefore use appropriate language."

Lip readers were called in earlier this month to decipher what May herself said in an apparently ill-tempered exchange with European Commission leader Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels.

They reported that May was berating Juncker for apparently having called her Brexit plans "nebulous."

It was not the first time a row had blown up over the alleged use of the phrase "stupid woman" in parliament. In June, Bercow was alleged to have applied it to cabinet minister Andrea Leadsom.

The Commons standards watchdog decided he should not be investigated.

At least give him credit for making an accurate assessment of May's mental ability.

Looks like the mother of all defining Brexit quotes . I thought he said sunken pound most say he said stupid woman he says stupid people I say 52% he's right????

I don't understand why MPs are suddenly referred to as "lawmakers". Has this phrase floated across the pond?

I was under the impression that the Law Lords made the law in the UK. (Well them and the EU).

I'm no fan of Corbyn - but he certainly hit the nail on the head!

I always thought you could say what you like inside parliament--within reason I suppose ? but saying something outside could lead to prosecution ? -- never the less --as Shakespeare wrote  "Much to do about  Nothing " for F###s sake ---Boo Hoo --get on with more Pressing items -I sure there are one or two - to take their minds off this terrible injustice !!

Corbyn and class are in no way going together.

That man is a terrorist lover and a hater of Jews.

Or conversely, a freedom fighter lover (one man's terrorist is another mans freedom fighter) and a hater of Zionists (anti Semitic and anti Zionist are apples and oranges).

Nope. Was educates in Shropshire at Haberdashers' Adams Grammar school, which is a selective entry state school. Attended as a day student having passed his 11+. Parents didn't pay fees.

However, I wouldn't advocate him as a future Prime Minister, as his political philosophies are firmly fixed in the mid '70s. Also has a personality which makes him unelectable.

Right or wrong he said “ stupid woman” but now he’s a liar as well. The UK was screwed the day they signed up with the EU. Best thing is they never gave up the pound, once all the dooms day scenarios have gone they’ll be better off.

I think it has been many decades since the word honorable has been a appropriate address...

As are all politicians. May is a closet remainer, Corbyn is a closet Brexiteer and both are batting for the other side. How hypocritical is that?

Our current government is propped up by terrorist lovers - nakedly corrupt, bigoted, homophobic terrorist lovers at that.

British politics has never been particularly bright, but the black day you are predicting actually came about in June last year.

It should have been "The right honourable, stupid women".

Remember, formalities must always be observed in parliament! ????????????

Earlier in the week, Conservative MP Nicholas Soames MP told an SNP MP, before the man had a chance to open his mouth, to 'go back to Skye'. This is the same Nicholas Soames who thinks that it is acceptable behaviour for members to bark like dogs when women MPs speak. I have yet to hear any outrage from the tory benches about that particular individual.

???

please elaborate,

do you refer to right after the GE, when May lost majority?

Corbyn sailed up for a day or two until TM got DUPed?

"you don't have be a gentleman and have class"

As others have pointed out, the term 'honourable' when it comes to politicians is a joke!

But I'm interested in what exactly you mean by the above statement.  Precisely how do you define "gentlemen" and "class"?

Exactly that - the DUP:

Corrupt: Renewable Heat Incentive scandal

Bigoted: Anti-Catholic bigotry of many in DUP still significant

Homophobia: Meet the DUP homophobes who now hold the keys to power in the UK

Terrorist lovers: The-terror-links-Ian-Paisley-s-DUP-party

But as others have pointed far more succinctly than me, this is a smokescreen designed to distract the electorate from the chaos of Westminster. Corbyn made a stupid mistake and the opposition piled in on him to take the heat of themselves.

flogging off the country, screwing the disabled, giving money to your rich mates, all OK, as long as you are a gentleman

The only thing he did wrong was to deny it.

The sight of Tory MPs queuing up to show Bercow their phone evidence was even more amusing.

Lol.... as an utterance in an adversarial parliament, who really cares.... if they can’t handle a bit of name calling, they shouldn’t be there to start with.

stupid woman... ????????????.... hardly a real insult... she is a woman, and he thinks her stupid... what’s the problem?

now if he had called her a stupid man... well then, that’s a different ballgame altogether ????

Foul mouthed abuse is not acceptable in any circumstance; I am not sure why you think I might approve of it in any situation, least of all when it is directed at the a member of the party that is best placed to save my country from the Brexit we overwhelmingly rejected.
