A Home Away from Home

No matter how old we get, homesickness can catch us unawares at any age. Every now and then, we’ll experience intense pangs for our native country—especially around the holiday season. Which is why DeeMoney has spent the last two months investing in one of our most active communities in Thailand: the Filipino community.

The number of Filipinos in Thailand outranks any other country in the APAC region with over 14,000 skilled workers and technicians who live here. DeeMoney wanted to recognize this significant expat population—a large number of whom live and work in Bangkok—with a major festive celebration that would bring all the cheer of their native holiday to the city in the form of singing, games, sports, and dancing.

For Filipinos, Paskong Pinoy is one of the most anticipated holidays in the calendar. And understandably so. For the closing months of the year (those that end “-ber”) are considered Christmas Months. Yes, “Months.” And why not? Christmas is a universal celebration that brings family and friends together from all over the world.

Paskong Pinoy officially began at the close of the DeeMoney Cup Championship Games which included basketball, badminton, and volleyball games and nearly 500 players over the course of the league. The DeeMoney Cup 2018 in Bangkok was the first Filipino multi-games sports tournament to mark a Thai calendar. All with the aim of bringing the Filipino community together for the festivities each week. After activities occurring on seven consecutive Sundays from the end of October, the final day of the free event concluded on December 9th, 2018 with around 1,000 Filipinos in attendance.

The ensuing Paskong Pinoy line-up was packed with games, activities, singing contests, and dance displays. Though one of the most anticipated features of the day was the Mr & Miss DeeMoney contest. Under the direction of Dario Mando of Darla Mode Bangkok—a top online distributor of Thai beauty products in the Philippines—contestants wowed the crowd during the pageant for the title of Mr or Miss DeeMoney.

As well as all the scheduled events, attendees were also treated to a range of different native dishes and delights in honor of the festive holidays. With the amazing numbers in attendance though, these were in high demand! The event ran from 8 am in the morning and didn’t finish till 9:45 pm. The day couldn’t have happened without the support and sponsorship of the Association of Filipinos in Thailand (AFT) as well as many other prominent companies and organizations in Bangkok.

Aswin Phlaphongphanich, CEO of SawasdeeShop and Founder of DeeMoney said, “DeeMoney wanted to recognize the importance of giving back to one of our most important communities during the seasonal festivities. It was a pleasure to celebrate Christmas with such a warm and joyous crowd. We look forward to making next year’s follow-up even bigger and better to bring even more people together.”
