If you’re at least 20 years old, and one of you has Thai nationality, then, as a same-sex couple, you will soon be able to marry in Thailand.

The cabinet has approved the civil partnership Bill, paving the way for Thailand to become the first country in Asia to endorse same-sex marriage.

The current Bill, approved by the Cabinet yesterday, allows same-sex couples to adopt children, according to Nathporn Chatusripitak, an adviser to the Prime Minister’s Office.

What is the purpose of this new law?

Is this government empowerment? Government empowering itself with more laws, more required licenses, more control? How nice... the state allows you to be married (sarcasm).

Does this give new opportunities for ladyboys who were previously disenfranchised? Did gay people feel disenfranchised? Do gay couples have new opportunities to navigate the associated laws that are affected by the state allowing you to marry?

One wonders how far this (seemingly) progressive Bill goes in the rights it grants. Will it, for example, reduce by 50% the amount of money (as per heterosexual couples) that a foreigner married to a Thai same-sex spouse is required to hold in his bank account in order to acquire a retirement visa? I bet it does not! As usual, everything will be left vague and open to the whims of any presiding 'Government official' ...

People celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia – aka IDAHOT – in 2017 at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.

BANGKOK — Legal recognition of civil unions moved forward Tuesday with the interim cabinet’s approval.

At its final meeting of 2018, the cabinet signed off on a draft civil partnership bill which would make Thailand the first country in all of Asia, to afford status and legal protections to same-sex couples.

At least they didn't go the elongated process that Australia did which was largely opposed by religious entities who are notorious for hiding homosexuals, Lesbians regrettably kiddy fiddlers.

Not hurting anyone except the relatives who are hoping to get a property and money when one of them kicks the bucket. I assume this means proper marital rights for inheritance etc where properties are concerned.

Could be a bit of pressure on some falangs in Boyztown now.

Meh. I don't care if they do the right thing for the wrong reason.

Unless I'm reading this wrong, this is not gay marriage. It is civil unions. The differences between a civil union and a marriage are not spelled out.

I’ve always felt that ‘marriage’ was the wrong terminology to employ for homosexual unions.  It has a very particular religious significance for many people...deriving from the biological imperative of producing children. I know, I know....making babies is not the sole function of heterosexual marriage but is also never the function of homosexual unions.

I think this will long be a contentious point but maybe it can be negotiated to a reasonable harmonious general acceptance. There is in my opinion no reason to deny the civil benefits of matrimony to same sex couples so I applaud this decision by the government.

I wonder how this will apply to foreigners who marry a Thai citizen. Will they be eligible for the lower 40,000 baht income requirement and to have a work permit, as I think heterosexual couples now are? Also, calling it a civil union is problematic. Some countries won't accept civil unions as valid for immigration purposes (I think this includes the U.S.). It's a step forward, but curious about the details...

gift implies that you give something to someone.

human rights can not be given can only be taken away , what occurred is that some of what has being denied is no longer denied.

It's sad to see Thailand falling for the leftist pozz like Western nations.

What is sad is that you refuse to get out of the cave. Come on out into the sunlight the weather is fine.

Forget about it. You already OWN your dog. Your dog already gives you unconditional love even if as a human being you're a total A-hole.

Not good enough for you? Woof woof.
