The death toll from road accidents in the first two days of the “Seven Dangerous Days” of the New Year holidays has risen to 98, while 1,024 others were injured nationwide, the transport minister said on Saturday.

Transport Minister Akom Termpithayaphaisit told a press conference that on Friday, the second day of seven-day road accident monitoring period, 570 accidents occurred that claimed 56 lives and injured 592 others.

He said 38 died at the scene of the accidents while 18 others died in hospital.

He said drunk driving was the main cause of the accidents, and was responsible for 38.95 per cent of Friday's accidents, followed by speed limit violations (28.60 per cent).

He said 76.68 per cent of incidents involved motorcyclists.

The first two days of the monitoring period saw 990 accidents, killing 98 people and injuring 1,024 others, he said.

So far, Chiang Mai province has the biggest number of accidents (33 accidents) while Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai and Lop Buri had the biggest number of accumulated deaths, each with five.

Phew ! Back on track then.   I was a little concerned when only 42 died yesterday.   Come on Thailand ! You can do it.

  • Get a grip, it's called ... sarcasm

  • The average number of deaths per day is 60 so these 'dangerous days' are actually safer than normal.

77% of incidents involved bikes, be interesting to see the number of deaths from bikes, and how many were related to people not wearing bash hats.

He said zero for public transport, nothing to do with private vehicles.

Well going on a purely mathematical guess 98 divided by 2 = 49, so 49x5=245 plus 98 =343,of course random factors come in, after all it is the 29th,so the party has only just started, i reckon 400 odd and i will be staying safe at home new years eve watching Zulu again for what feels like the above numbers.

Untrue stats as always.

The above stat is below the daily average.

Daily average is 74.

Every holiday the stats come out below the average.

Do we get a photoshoot of "pointing" at the lower stats ?

I hope so.

I love these photoshoots.

Yes.Spot on and deserves to be repeated.

In 2015 it was calculated at 80 per day by WHO-after they had burrowed their way through the usual Thai tosh.

There is no reason why it would have fallen-60 per day is just creative accounting.

Nobody wants anyone to die, quite the reverse in fact. We are all praying for safer roads. The cynical comments are because many Thai people aren't willing to change their ways, one example being drink driving. The sad statistics will never improve until these people realize they are not immune from the daily carnage.

It appears that many Thais in previous lives apear to have been Lemmings. RIP to the innocnets MURDERED by drunk drivers.

They're not keyboard warriors. Many are poor people who spend their time romping from their personal sad lives that can only be unhappy because happy folks never ever spend their time criticizing everything repeatedly 365 days a year, which unfortunately is the case for some members  here, the same sentences repeated hundreds of times receiving the same dozens of likes by the members of the club.  Fortunately TV has many other advantages, among other some members able to answer with precision and kindness on all possible questions about this country!

Most of the bikes accident are caused by car's hitting.

Not heartless. Just amazed at Thai stupidity.

Nobody wish this people to die! Wish them more brains to think about consequences drunk and drive no helmet etc!

It’s massively underreported. The WHO claims Thailand underreports by 30% for general road casualties so these deadly days will be even more underreported if they are better than the average days.

Natural selection is at work here. Who are we to stand in in the way of that?

Let the drunk drivers die. I just don’t want them to take others with them, but if they want to go head first into a pole, I’m all for it.
