Hotels In Chiang Mai

Hi,

I know there is a pinned hotel-thread here, which I have used before. However, it is a link to an official hotel-search facility and in the past I was a bit disappointed at some of the hotels I had booked online. A search turned out a thread from 2005.

What would interest me are some personal recommendations of people that have experience. I am going on business, therefore appreciate a quiet, central place, mid-price range. Know of any?

When i first came to CM i tried various centrally located accomodation but steered clear of the 'high risers' (pornping etc...)

Have to say that if i didn't have a house here and needed a quiet inexpensive place not far from tapae, then i would re-visit Safe House Court on Ratchaphakhinai Rd. If it's still the same as when i stayed (2 yrs ago) & i don't see why it shouldn't be, then yeah.. this would be my recommendation.

The Montri Hotel is clean and safe with safety deposit boxes, English TV channels and refrigerator for something like 650 baht (they discount during low season). Helpful, efficient staff. Right in front of Thapae Gate.

2-6 Ratchadamnoen Road.

Rydges Amora works well for business I think. Or Empress Hotel. They're like 1000-1500 on the booking sites.

Have stayed in Rydges Amora and found it not really my style (although it is near to a LOT of bookstores!!! :o:D:D ). Think I will go for something smaller (will check out the ones mentioned earlier).

Thanks to everyone.

AH, okay!! I subconsciously equate 'a business trip' with 'avoiding all style whatsoever and sacrifice everything for a bog standard hotel experience, wifi in the room and a 24 hour business center'.

Anyway, I think Tamarind Village is stylish. Low-rise, traditional-ish architecture, nice and quiet location in the old town. Prices vary WILDLY, but some of the booking sites have it for around 1500 baht.

Yes, sure. That's what many people do. It is, however, a difference whether you work for a transnational company or for a small NGO. :o

All I want is the cheapest thing that is clean and comfortable and has a swimming pool. IMHO anything more is just a waste of money! :o

Thanks Ulysses. That was a surprise. I had spent some days in my youth (think jurassic here) in a nice hotel called Thapae gate. Could not find it ever again. Guess what? The Montri IS (was) the Thapae Gate hotel! And I have been looking for it all over.... Too bad I only came home at nights when I stayed at Rydges, otherwise I would have seen it.

Montri has free wireless in all rooms now, but no pool anymore.

When I come into town and am intending to stay I book a room at the Travelers Inn on Loi Kroh double bed 600B twin singles 650. Has cable, air, bathroom, is centrally located, every tuk tuk driver in CM knows where it is, they have staff on desk duty 24x7. have internet downstairs (3x'puters) and fax, telephone etc.

It isn't the Chiangmai Orchid but for a place to dump the swag on a night out it is my preferred good choice.
