I'm leaving this Sunday for my first trip to Japan (other than transit at Narita). I'm going to Sapporo, bypassing Tokyo entirely.

Where should I buy yen? I live in Chiang Mai. Ordinarily, I would exchange at SuperRich. Currently, I have US dollars or baht. If I try to buy yen in Thailand with dollars, am I doing two exchanges? That would be USD>baht then baht>yen, or will the exchange company allow me to buy yen with dollars? If that's the case, am I better off buying yen with dollars at the airport when I land in Japan, or better to buy yen with baht before I leave Thailand? Thanks in advance for knowledgeable advice.

I would expect that if you change USD to JPY in Thailand they would actually do two transactions.

So with the current Superrich rates this would be 1 USD = 32.25/0.3010 = 107.14 JPY

The first japanese money exchanger that showed up for me on Google:

https://www.gpa-net.co.jp/en/passenger-service/rate/

1 USD = 108.32

So you should go to a money exchanger in Japan to exchange your USD to JPY
