Tourism ministry says "sorry about your lost arm" - gives flowers to Chinese blogger

Thai Rath reported that officials from the Tourist Assistance Center of the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports visited the female Chinese blogger who lost her left arm in a road accident on the way from Bangkok to Koh Chang. 

 

Earlier the Thai media had said the story produced a firestorm of criticism in China in a story that they headlined "Don't go to Thailand - say Chinese on social media".

 

The blogger had been on a trip in a rented van with driver provided by a tour company.

 

Yesterday the TAC officials were at the well known blogger's bedside with other state officials. 

 

She said on Weibo: "The tourism officials visited me with flowers and asked me about the accident. They had seen the news online. Thanks to everyone".

 

She added:"I hope they investigate these rental companies to stop such accidents in the future". 

 

Police stated that the company and its driver and the family of the victim would all be getting together to discuss compensation. 

 

They hoped that some good would come of the investigation in terms of improving road safety and communications.

It's all in hand:

GPS on all tour buses

Checking of drivers for alcohol & drug use

New larger buses, allowing an improved DPC figure (Death Per Collision)

All the above will be has been passed by law, but only implemented occasionally during holidays, and if there is adverse publicity - until it dies down.

A lot of deaths and bad injuries can be avoided just by using safety gear such as seat belts and crash helmets (when driving motorbike).

It wasn't a tour bus.

There was no suggestion that the driver was under the influence.

"Don't go to Thailand - say Chinese on social media".  That must be cause for alarm, Thailand has pretty well put all it's tourism eggs into the Chinese basket. From recent reports it appears the Chinese no longer consider Thailand the flavour of the month. Going to be a lot of empty hotel rooms and seats in retaurants & boats. But next big target are the Indians (again) it won't take long for them to get fed up with Thai arrogance and being fleeced and assulted.

So the entire country of China now knows what most farang already knew: Thai van drivers are a suicidal lot and best to be avoided (drive too fast, pass on blind corners and hills, would rather die then yield right-of-way).  This applies to van drivers, bus drivers, cab drivers and pretty much any Thai behind the wheel.  Unlike farangs, Chinese who seem to have a hive-mind will probably continue to see Thailand as an increasingly dangerous place to travel as tourism numbers continue to decline.  And they have a point.
