Sukhumvit flooding fix remains years off

PATTAYA:--A permanent solution to flooding along Sukhumvit Road remains years away.

Pattaya deputy mayors Pattana Boonsawat and Banlue Kullavanijaya and city engineers surveyed the area along Sukhumvit opposite Nongyai Temple and Nongyai pump station.

Pumps currently shuttle storm runoff into the Suapaew Canal which flows into the Naklua Canal and into the sea.

But the pumps are not enough to prevent the busy highway from critically flooding during large storms.

Pattaya has designed a new drainage system for the western side of Sukhumvit, but even if it is approved, the budget isn’t expected to be allocated until the 2020 fiscal year, the deputy mayors said.

Until then, the city plans to install more pumps.
