Back in the day, nurses were trained in schools of nursing, which were attached to hospitals. Students joined at 16 and underwent 3 years training (with pay) which included lots of on the job training and produced excellent nurses. My wife went through that system and swears it produced better quality nurses than any superseding system. It was a very popular vocation and there was always stiff competition for places.

 

This system was superseded, when it was decided that nurses needed a university degree. Schools of nursing were closed and responsibility for training was given over to universities. To ensure the necessary uptake, the government of the day waived student fees and even gave grants to those taking nursing degrees. Recruiting remained suitably high although the quality of nurses coming out of the system dropped. Less on the job training.

 

In the late 2000s, when the Conservative government came to power, grants were stopped. Then 4 years later they decided that student nurses should pay tuition fees, the same as all other students. As it's a relatively difficult and arduous degree to complete, uptake for nursing degree courses dropped like a stone, producing a massive shortfall in nurses coming through the system.

 

Nurses were recruited from throughout the EU and beyond. My daughter supervise a group of 12 Spanish nurses being assimilated into her hospital. In her own words, they were next to useless. After 2 years only one remained in the UK. Now they are recruited from all over the globe and again, in my daughter's words, worse than useless, a bloody liability, downright dangerous. This has been compounded by the government continuously cutting the funding for nurses, meaning that hospitals can't afford the required number of nurses on the wards. Also the Conservative government has severely restricted the pay increases for nurses for nurses, for several years it was zero. This caused many, high quality, senior nurses to leave the NHS.

 

Don't blame the immigrants for a lack of quality nurses on your hospital wards, the blame lies fairly and squarely with the Conservative government.

 

My sister and my friend's wife were nurses who were in the service when it was on the job training and they said exactly the same thing as you. I remember as a kid my sister showing me how she'd been taught to tuck in bed corners!

 

My sister left the profession pretty quickly and became a school teacher but my pal's wife saw it through till she retired. She came to hate the job because of the poor quality and couldn't care less attitude of her colleagues and the gormless so called managers and administrators.

I remember reports of policemen taunting the strikers by waving their wage slips in the strikers' faces and telling them about how much overtime payments they were getting. Millions of working people who some on the left would describe as 'hard right' supported the miners. 

 

When collections for the miners' families were organised in London the miners were moved by the warm reception they received while collecting money at places such as train and underground stations.

55% of people polled in 2006 supported policies put up by the BNP but that support diminished when it was revealed where they originated. But if a new nationalist party adopted those policies now who knows what might happen. Coal is still the major source of energy in Germany and they're not doing too bad.

 

It could still be the same in the UK but for the politicians, the National Coal Board and as the MSM media told us a certain Mr Arthur Scargill. But we know where the interests of the MSM lie.

 

The MSM has got a lot to answer for in many aspects of our existence. They were right behind Blair and his invasion of Iraq and WMDs etc. The Sun newspaper got him elected just like it was previously referred to as Maggie's Tory comic.

Too many falsehoods

 

One is that hard coal accounts for 12% of German power as opposed to renewables at 35%. Even if you include lignite which we don't have in the UK, renewables lead. Surprisingly foolish for Germany to ditch nuclear but such is the power of coalition government.

 

Coal did need to be phased out. 50 years would have been fine.

i remember the miners taunting the police with bottles in their face too

i remember sp called miners stopping the country from working, each time they wanted  big pay rises

i remember when Labour proposed  and carried out the closing of lots of mine too

i remember miners being led by a certain Mr Scargill, who lied to his union members 

i remember miners being told they making it uneconomical for us pt purchase UK coal, but chose to ignore it

i remember miners saying nobody should work in such conditions below ground, but when they got the chance to stop, theru complained about that too

And yes i'm from the north, from mining areas, but who decided from young age that i would learn a skilled trade rather than be a tunnel rat

Actually  I knew someone who I would describe as the local village  eccentric who did break the strike .

It took about 400 policemen to get him through the line .
