Jai Dee Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 Media reform master plan to help create more constructive media content Minister attached to the Office of the Prime Minister believed that the media reform master plan will prompt media producers to create more constructive content. Minister attached to the PM’s Office, Thirapat Serirangsan (ธีรภัทร์ เสรีรังสรรค์) presided over a meeting of a committee responsible for the master plan on national consumption of media for social and political development. The committee is chaired by Md.Nirand Phitakwatchara (นิรันดร์ พิทักษ์วัชระ). The meeting agreed to set up three subcommittees to be in charge of each dimension of the media reform effort. There are the master plan drafting subcommittee, the brainstorming subcommittee, and the legal subcommittee. In addition, the meeting approved the set up of a new committee responsible for problems found in mainstream media, including radio, television, newspaper, as well as in new media, including the Internet, satellite television channel, and community radio/television. The meeting also voiced concern over the community media which gets more commercial-oriented. The above committee will work in cooperation with a legal team responsible for the drafting the National Broadcasting Service Committee (NBC) Act. NBC is an independent unit which is in charge of the regulation of Thai media. According to the minister, the master plan is expected to be completed by the next six months and it will be submitted to the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) later for consideration. baabaabobo Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 "Master Plan" "national consumption of media" "Media reform" "regulation of Thai media" "constructive media" Does anyone else have a problem with this? If not I suggest re-reading George Orwell's 1984. The "thought police" are already here.
spot Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 erm...I thought the current regime was supposed to just be keeping things ticking over until the 'elected' government takes over?

I think what they are doing is good. something needed to be done about the slander that was going on. slander is not freedom of speech. but yes, I can see your point about the possibility of the extreme happening. ..I can just hope the legal committee understands the importance of their role in the whole framework.

Source: Thai National News Bureau Public Relations Department - 22 Febuary 2007 Seems an awful lot of committees. Who appoints them and what qualifications do they have? Best one is "the brainstorming sub-committee", the whole idea that you can just set up a committe of brainstorms is ludicrous and goes against the principal of brainstorming as a problem solving tool. Like baabaabobo I too have concerns regarding the direction that this administration is taking. A little bit here, a little bit there they are gradually exerting their control over the media and one day we may look back on the Thaksin era as one of press freedom. Very Orwellian.
