Talks planned with oil refineries to upgrade quality of diesel to deal with pollution

In yet another attempt to ease the health hazards posed by PM2.5 dust particles, the Energy Business Department plans to hold a meeting with oil refineries this week about the possibility of upgrading the quality standard of diesel from Euro 4 to Euro 5.

The department director-general Ms Nanthika Tungsupanich said today that the meeting was intended to sound out the opinions of the six oil refineries about when they will be ready to upgrade the quality standard of oil products, diesel in particular, to Euro 5 level.

Diesel of Euro 4 standard contains 55 ppm sulfur while the Euro 5 standard sets the amount of sulfur at 10 ppm.

Sticking plaster over a hole in a dam .. A lot of older vehicles here aren't Euro5 spec' so filling them with ultra refined diesel will make little difference .. Factor in lack of maintenance and servicing which is nearer to the problem of why some belch out black smoke and the hoped for result will be just that .. Hoped for ..

I have to admit that I'm impressed they are talking about such a fundamental improvement. Now, let's see other manageable ideas being considered.

Surely one way would be to make it more difficult to buy a car, and increase the level of cleaner public transport - but not only in Bangkok - everywhere.

I think that's too monumentally difficult for a song-writing PM. Unless he prays for a reduction in consumer buying of course - it worked last time he prayed - or so he claims.

Still, more praying and less preying is a start for him.

Blame and deflection. One solution and one only....strict  emissions control ,not a one day war ,not a specific soft target with a photo opp...every motor vehicle must pass ,without bribes without promises...pass or fail ..period

Deflection indeed. The biggest polluters are rice, sugarcane (concessions to Chinese companies) and corn, mostly used to feed animals. Just check pollution, fire snd wind maps.

And now a committee must be formed.

These are only "talks" which are "planned" which means nothing will happen.

They are only looking for a scapegoat to draw some of the public and media flack away from the brain dead junta which seems helpless to do anything meaningful.

Thumb twiddling is more their style so as a distraction they just point the accusatory finger at the refineries to take the heat off.

Ah; another meeting to discuss the date for the next meeting whilst eating and drinking at tax payers expense.

Why not ban the use of Diesel after a certain date and ban the sale of this fuel altogether.   Go to Taiwan where there are zero Diesel Pick-Ups on the road as they are seen as a menace in more ways than one and the Population have been steered away from buying them altogether.  However; we all know that Thailand will be the last country on the Planet to do away with both Pick-Ups and Diesel !

Yes, absolutely: all the faux-elite here do is talk - and amass unimaginable amounts of corruption money into their hidden bank accounts!

They really are back in the 60s sometimes....

They don't have time to burn crops with all that talking I suppose.
