My mate from Denmark is coming over on the 12 of April going through passport control at 0800 and leave on the 12 of May going through passport control at 0500 is that 3 hours within the 30 days or 21 hours over ?

Can anybody clarify if that is 30 or 31 days?

He is married to a Thai and comes over 2 or 3 times a year.

A visa exempt entry (it is not a "visa") allows you to stay 30 days (29 nights) in Thailand. If leaving from one of the Bangkok airports, while technically an overstay, you are not fined for staying 31 days (30 nights).

April 12th is day 1, which makes May 11th day 30.

Leaving on May 12th is day 31 and a one day overstay. If leaving from BKK or DMK immigration will/should waive the overstay fine (500 baht) as the overstay is less than 24 hours. The IO may/may not stamp their passport with a stamp confirming the overstay but that is was less than 24 hours.

It’s 30 days. The day (regardless of the time) you enter counts as day 1.

The alternative perhaps would be getting to the airport and through Immigration before midnight on the 11th. That would mean 5 or 6 hours airside waiting rather than 2 or 3 hours.
