New laws concerning water distribution and water usage will be enforced in the next two years following the newly endorsed water-resources bill.

The laws are currently at the draft stage and public hearings on collection fees and the authorisation of water usage will be held to gauge the views of all concerned stakeholders, Somkiat Prajamwong, secretary-general of the Water Resources Management Office said this week.

He added that aim is to ensure no fees are collected for water used for basic needs.

“We are now studying proposals from concerned agencies including the Royal Irrigation Department to ensure fairness for all parties. The extent of water usage and the means of collecting fees from some sectors such as the industrial sector will be studied thoroughly and public hearings will be held to gauge views first,” Somkiat added.

The newly endorsed water resources law should go into effect within 90 days after it was published in the Royal Gazette in late December.

Somkiat expects the law to help achieve integrated water management, which is now scattered among concerned agencies.
