Police academy opens to fight crime, terror

BANGKOK: -- Thailand and the United States on Monday jointly dedicated a new police academy to train officers to fight transnational crime and terrorism.

Speaking at a dedication ceremony attended by Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, US Ambassador to Thailand Darryl Johnson said the new Bangkok headquarters of the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) will cope with increasingly sophisticated criminals.

"Criminals have an extraordinary and frightening capacity to turn the fortunes of history and the developments of technology to their advantage against the citizens of their own and other nations," Johnson said.

"It is our goal, in what seems to be a never-ending struggle, to keep up with the incredible speed and diversity of criminal enterprises and to surpass them, so that they encounter a well-trained and coordinated law enforcement presence capable of stopping them."

Construction of the new ILEA building, within the compound of the Royal Thai Police Sports Club, was financed by a two million dollar contribution by the US government and took ten months.

It seems to me it is a bit worrisome that the chief violator of human rights on the international scene, the US, is doing the instructing.

Now if Thailand would only come up with something like POST (Police Officers Standard Training) for their regular officers.
