A group of about a dozen Thais went to Pattaya police yesterday to say that one of their trusted friends had ripped them off to the tune of 10 million baht.

Piyathida Wongthani, 40, said they believed their friend because she ran a tour company. They invested in a Ponzi scheme and an insurance and loan scam.

There are thought to be more than 20 victims some of whom have already reported separately to police. Losses are in the region of ten million baht, reported Pattaya Online News

Police said they want to talk to Suphaporn Thongwanphen, 51, who has a police record for hiring illegal guides.

Although they have been ripped off, at least there appears to be food on the table for them.

These schemes are up and down the country, Thai's are suckers for chasing big returns with no real effort to do their homework before investing their life savings.

I hope the 20 'victims' get their noses rubbed in it for their self-admitted insurance & loan scam.

Thai dishonesty:

Wait for the knock on your door for using these derogative words in your headline with intention to tarnish the image of the country (sarcasm)

As usual greed overcame common sense caused by the lack of a good education. I try to feel sorry for these people as they are not rich but the apparent lack of morals by the general Thai population makes scams like this very easy.

it was "invested" therefore not  stolen.................simple, a  bit  like the greedy  "fools" who invested

If it benefits them they don't care they will steal from anyone.

If something sounds too good to be true.....it usually is.

Ahh, The Game of Shares. .......

This thread makes a refreshing change from the SOS of a farang being conned by a Thai. Although having said that, I've found all the Thais I deal with on a daily basis are honest. Perhaps that's because I'm in Chiang Mai, not Pattaya.

Whats that guys name I think he is in jail for a hundred years, Bernie something. Not in Thailand

a few years ago my gf at the time introduced me to one of her friends who tried to involve me in one of these schemes. it was so obviously dodgy that i laughed.

Ponzi...nuff said

While he has 10 million baht to spend, I bet they do.

Misunderstanding yet to be proved !

Even my Thai wife of 20 years has always told me never ever trust a Thai person.

At least they are equal opportunity and everyone is a potential target for the devious sorts.
